Wal-Mart has gotten so big they can push manufacturers around. Just ask Black and Decker. Wal-mart is so powerful their reps can tell B&D what they will get paid for each item B&D makes, meaning B&D must farm out their production to low-labor-cost places like China. There is a great PBS episode of "Frontline" that talks all about Wal-Mart, and there are a couple of great books out there telling about the lie that is Wal-Mart. I think one great one is called "The Big-Box Swindle". I met the author of this book, but I can't remember her name.
When a Wal-Mart comes into a community, for every dollar that is spent at the new Wal-Mart, only about 20 cents stays in the local economy. The rest goes back to Arkansas. Is it any surprise Wal-marts flourish? When one pops up in a town, it won't be long and everyone will be shopping there because they MUST shop there. The Wal-mart has driven them out of businesses or jobs, meaning they have to go to where the prices are lowest. Sounds like more of the "Sovietization" of America.
I remember the propaganda that was on the news back in the early '80s on ABC. You guys remember Frank Reynolds, Max Robinson, and Peter Jennings, right? Back when those guys were the ABC news anchors, I used to watch footage out of the USSR of people standing in long lines at stores, and the anchors loved to point out the fact the people were standing in those long lines. But what happens when you go to a Wal-Mart in 2007? You have to stand in the same long-### lines. Sure, the shelves are stocked (because there is no shortage of truck drivers to deliver that ####), but you still have to wait, just like the Russkies on those old news broadcasts did.
You guys should start boycotting Wal-Marts. They treat drivers like dirt at their warehouses, sure. But they also are treating entire communities like dirt.
Again, you lovers of the republican party and the free market have to hear me say "I told you so."Kiwi Al Thanks this. -
You work for the same company I do--the one with the red tractors who are going from Volvos to Petes--right?

Looks like you are a 'sufferer' too! ha ha
So which is it: they dont know or they dont care?!!

When I worked at USX I saw a invoice once when I was in the office at the Lincoln term which showed that they were paid $35 dollars a hour for detention after 2 hours even though the driver could not ask for it till after 4 hours and then it was at $10 a hour and only if he could get his dm to put in for it. It was then that I learned that just because the drivers don't get paid for sitting most of the time the carriers can and pocket the money.
They also do the same thing on driver unloads. The carriers don't pay the driver what they get paid for a driver unload. I was told I would get paid max $35 for a tailgate load of insulation by USX when I knew that they had already been paid $100 for the driver unload not assist on that load. It was right on the bills along with what the load paid the carrier. Then once when I unloaded a load of gatorade to make the $100 on the driver unload they asked me specifics on what I did in unloading it. I said their policy stated if I unloaded a full trailer I would be paid $100 for a driver unload it did not state by what means, so pay up. It took me 3 months and threating to shut down a high dollar load to get the money loaded on my card but I finally got paid. -
May trucking is getting rid of all the Volvo's also and buying 387 Pete's. I was told the Volvo's are to expensive to maintain and break down to often. I think we will ony have 379 short & long nose Pete's and 387's in the future. My Frtshaker is a 2004 and I don't see any new ones being purchased. I have not heard much good about the 387 by drivers who use them.

Well, rumor has it we're getting 700 new trailers...here's hoping it's true.
I'm on the can fleet, so normally I don't have to care about the trailer situation. But since freight's sucked the high hard one all this year, we're now having to deal with van freight and thus, the lack of MT's.
In the words of Slick Willie, "Ah fee-ul yore pine."
I'm really considering getting my HM...and doubles...and going where the $$ seems to be. Our company isn't the worst out there, but if freight don't pick up I'm going to have to consider a career change. -
You'll be better off if you did that, you'll be home more, and make a whole lot more money too.
-
So I keep hearing.
Oh...sorry--I'm a real truck driver. I'm supposed to whine about daycabs, doubles, HM, or anything that resembles actual work. What was I thinking?
