"X-Chain" a term I'm not familiar with. I will venture a guess, please correct me if I'm wrong: It means to chain one outside tire of the front axle and the opposite outside tire of the rear? Like if I chain the right outside front, then I would need to chain the left outside rear as well?
It's an honest question, so please save the YELLING ok, Otterhalf?

You have it correct......
Some drivers refer to it as "Drag chains"......Injun Thanks this. -
Back when I drove if I had to do a set of Max Chains here is how I threw them Singles on the front Drive axle Doubles on the Second drive. Then x Chained the Trailer one on the LFO then the RRO never had a problem getting over the passes like that. Hated throwing the iron but could do it in less than 25 mins at the end.

I still carry 2 rails and 4 singles. Guess I'm just not ready for the new requirement.

I wanted to get two sets of triples.....But now I don't need them....

I am a woman driver. I cannot agree with you more about learning how to chain up before you have to. Because I am a woman and these dummies think I will not be rude, I have drivers come up to me all the time at chain up areas, as I am chaining, and want me to show them how to chain.
I was fortunate to not have to go to truck driving school. I learned from another driver some 32 years ago. On Saturdays or Sundays he would make me go out to the back 40 at truck stops and back into parking spots at all different angles.
He made me chain up, in them parking lots, when the sun was shining and we had nothing better to do.
(RIP Vinnie! You sure knew how to make training fun! LOL)
So, my attitude is, when you guys who need to learn how to chain up, are sitting at the truck stop and staring out the window, cause you have nothing better to do, get them chains out, come ask for help and I am more likely to help you, when the sun is shining.
I also made some 4" high homemade ramps that I carry in the winter. Drive your inside tires onto the ramps. It brings your outside tires off the ground about an inch. Throw them chains, don,t need to move the truck, and you will get your chains tight the first time.( Obviously doesn't work with double chains)
Take a 2x6x8 and cut 2 pieces, 2 foot long, cut 2 pieces, 1 1/2 foot long, bolt or glue them togather and your have a 2 ramps.leannamarie, trucker_101, Working Class Patriot and 2 others Thank this. -
I crossed Donner for the first time in 1980..
I go turned around at chain control because they wanted drag chains on the trailer..Back to the 49er to buy a set of singles...
So they required it back then, but I guess they keep changing the requirements thru the years...
I carry a set of doubles and 2 sets of singles...
If they need more then that,I'm going to bed.

Now I have ask you drivers this....I have never done this...but.....
I have heard from the "sick channel" (19) that some drivers said Donner had been so bad they had to chain up their steers to get out of trouble....
Anyone ever had to do that on Donner? -
Nope...............................

I've chained up one steer tire at times, when I was off road running in the mud, but not on the road, so far.
