This is how I do it. First, vet a phone that is capable of being a wifi hot spot. Wifi hot spot is diffrent from wifi. With wifi hot spot. As long you can get a phone signal. You can vet on the net. Most phone carriers charge for wifi hot spot, but there software that will let you by pass that. I was vrand father in with the old unlimted plan. They cant cut me off, but they will slow it down. You can turn your phone into wifi hot spot or tether . I have the net on my phone and laptop, but only pay for the net on my phone. The net on my laptop is free. There a bunch fourms for phones wich will give out tips about your phone. A bunch of people have done this and there nothing the carriers can do. Unless you go over 5gb. As long you dont watch movies or video. 5gb is plenty.

    xlsdraw Thanks this.

Here's my vote for the verizon air card. I'm on it now and that's all I use. I get excellent reception just about everywhere including the desert! So I would highly recommend it!

Another option to is that the new Droid phones have the aircard already built in so you can just tether your phone to your laptop and you have internet. Also with the new Droid you can actually tether it to your tv and download netflix right on to your tv and you can also play games and do everything your droid does on your tv. I couldn't think of anything better for over the road!

If you have android phone and you can tether or wifi hot spot. You wouldnt have to buy a air card. I use wifi hot spot because no cable. As long I have phone signal. I have the net.

I took the plunge with the brand new 4G Thunderbolt! Seemed like a much better option than the air card or mobile hot spot. The Thunderbolt has the hot spot built-in. I got several discounts. I'll be paying $30 per month for unlimited internet on the Thunderbolt and I'll be paying $20 per month for 2G on the hot spot. The first 60 days of hotspot were free.

I got the Thunderbolt, vehicle charger, Jawbone Noise Assassin 2.5 with (kill noise, listen to music, and talk to text & tweet) features, and a pack of 3 screen savers for an out-the-door total of $350.

You really need to look at the WIFI costs not only in the dollar amount but the cost of fuel and your time to get to that oh so good wifi hot spot! THEN look at that you paid for a month and you're stuck at a dock for 8 and no internet! You really do need to add fuel, mileage and time to that first cost to get to that truck stop then figure in NOT being able to get on line which does have a cost if you think about it! Also wifi when a lot of drivers are on gets slower than AOL used to be! That alone made me crazy! Nothing like playing that old DOD and being on the leader board then a truck drives between you and the antenna as you are jumping over a log and you freeze in mid air! When you unfreeze every noob in the room has shot your frozen arse and you are the leader in the last place rack! Also nothing like waiting for an hour for a 1.5 hour movie to download and buffer! Try watching a great movie in 5 minute chunks as it keeps buffering due to signal blockage!

Me I had Sprint and had the unlimited plan as I got rid of the TV and used the computer for all my entertainment and road needs for information! Kinda hard looking for something you need while not at a truck stop. Nothing like sitting in stopped city traffic and going on line and seeing where the problem is with all the cameras and then pulling up a local map and getting around that mess. Can't do that with that great WIFI plan at the truck stop! WIFI is the cheap way to do nothing that's costing you money! Especially if you get there late and there is NO parking! WOW! Great investment!

Then there is the dangers of a truck stop WIFI which has been beaten to death in several other threads.
They CAN be hijacked and there is nothing all of your anti virus, spyware, malware and firewalls can do about it! This stands true at coffee shops, hamburger joints and airports. WIFI is NOT safe and it doesn't matter if you see HTTPS in the url, as when I say hijacked all they (thieves, hackers, lowlifes) do is capture the WIFI signal the store puts out and retransmit it with a stronger signal and your computer will either automatically log on if you were on that wifi site before or because it's a stronger signal because we all, when looking at the pop up window will hit it! The information you send is copied. There are no attempts to invade your computer. It copies all information you send from sign on info to passwords! That is all in the open transmitted information! Not encrypted as your broadband signal is with that card! Also the same thing your wireless keyboard does if you did not hit the encrypt button in the setup options!

A word of warning: If at any wifi site stay off of any of your banking or money type of websites! If it pertains to money I'd not even look at the thing!
Get your own broadband card for your computer or use the tether function for your phone. I'd even worry about that wifi option or the mifi one on cells untill it can be proven it's completely safe.

Besides 5 gigs of broadband takes about 3 hours of video to break the limit! Unlimited even if $80 a month is way cheaper than the overage you will get hit with on those sad 5 or 10 gig limits if you use the computer for all your fun!

WOW players might as well detox as you'll not be doing many hours a night unless you really get paid high dollars in cents per mile pay!

Just pay the broadband for unlimited and have access 24/7 depending on which service you get and you do NOT have to go with the one you have cell service through! When you look at any of their service maps they all look like they have service even under your bed!

ZOOM IN to the maps and look closer to the areas you mainly drive in or the company has lanes and be surprised that what looked like a whole nation covered in orange, yellow or red when seen as a whole map when zoomed in all of a sudden there is an awful lot of white no service! Shop with care! TV and radio ads are paid for by the seller not the customers! They say what they want no matter if there are laws about truth in advertising! It that were true we would have no political ads!

I went to Costco and bought a myTouch 4G for $99 with a $99 rebate. I kept my current phone plan with t-mobile and added the data plan with it for another $30 a month and it is unlimited, according to my 'Current Activity" Screen. The phone works great as a hotspot or tetherd to my laptop. I used it in SLC last month and it worked great.

When you make your phone into a wifi hot spot. You dont need to look for hot spot.you are the hot spot and you create a name and pass word for it. For me. If I dont want to lug my laptop around. I use my phone to get on the net. If I want to surf the net on my lap top.I Can do it with buying a card and another plan from tbe carrier. Buiness people do it all the time.
