I believe there needs to be a national set of laws for loads up to a certain set of dimensions. At the very least, this should be true on the interstate system (preferably on US Highways as well). For example, I think loads up to 10W & 14H should be able to travel 24/7 on 4 lane highways with strobe lights on the rear of the trailer. They won't protrude into the other lane, and there is less traffic at night.

The funny thing about Al. is you can run a load up to 12' that is not a dozer and no need for a pilot car, but a dozer 8'7" wide and you need a pilot...
    Go figure.
I got nailed years ago without a pilot in Al. made it 15 miles and got hammered..
Sat 6 hours waiting for a new permit.
I told the company I needed a car. Go for it. famous last words..

Most of the eastern US permits for 3 axle groups with 12 wheels.( three axles with 4 wheels per axle)
Much of the west recognizes 2 axle groups with 16 wheels. (2 axles with 8 wheels per axle)

The 16 wheel axles groups are permitted for very different limits from state to state. I have heard limits as high as 72,000 per tandem and as low as 40,000 per tandem on the 16 wheel format axles.

We're buying a new trailer, initially we planned to by a standard 3X3X3 configuration but we are also considering the 2x2X2 with 8 wheel per axle configuration. Our experience is with the 12 wheel tridem.

Anyone with experience permitting and operating the 16 wheel configuration trailers,.........could you give me some input?
    1. What weight limits per tandem with 16 wheels you saw in various states?
    2. What states do not like 8 wheel axles?
    3. Anything else you deem relevant?:biggrin_25514:

You are exactly right! Some legislator's relative from Alabama ran into a dozer blade years ago and this law resulted. They do allow you to move less than 10 miles without an escort with a dozer and also have allowances for a deflecting device to replace the escort requirement.

The legislator's relative was an idiot and should have been charged. Some of these states have really stupid laws concerning over size. His relative wasn't paying attention so he went after the trucking industry. My guess is that he is a lawyer. I am not sure what type of deflecting device they are referring.

I had a load I picked up in Alabama that I routed through Arkansas to go into Texas due to Louisiana requiring escorts. It was cheaper to run a few extra miles than to pay for the escorts.

If you haul over sized loads you better make sure you read every word on the permit. If there is something that you don't understand or is incorrect you need to make sure things are correct before you pull out.

In Alabama, it was the Governors daughter that ran into a dozer blade which resulted in the new escort/dozer blades to the rear in Alabama!! In Ohio, you cannot exit the freeway for fuel or restroom if your permit does not specifically state that you can. Speed Limit for over size is 55 in ohio, misssouri, illinois, michigan and Virginia, That i can remember off top of my head.........In Indiana, oversize can run 24/7
Up to 110' long 10' wide, 13'6" high, and under 200,000 lbs

, but be careful when running I-70 East from Indiana into OHIO....The Last exit in Indiana, Exit 156 takes you to the Petro, But You Exit off still in Indiana, by the time you go to the Petro, your in OHIO, which means your in Curfew violation if its after dark, and route violation because your OHIO PERMIT doesnt Allow for you to be there!!.... all i can think of right now!!
