here is a typical day shift at my terminal........
call in at 8:00 am. go in at 10:00-12:00, either i will get the overflow freight that can't fit on a regular route, or, work the dock until needed for a p/u or delivery. go home around 20:00-23:00. our day runs are set up on the time slot you bid. i am "flex" or "casual". as needed. winter is hard on flex, work short hours or not at all. i have to say though, when we got slow this past year, senior drivers were staying home or leaving early so lower drivers could run and make at least 35- 40 hours.
you will make more money on linehaul. i worked linehaul for seven months last year and netted around 750 a week. i bid city this year and am netting around 680 a week. started last march.
there's things that really aggravate me about this place and things that i couldn't find anywhere else.
any ?'s just ask............
con way freight

did you get tired of linehaul? what sic are you at?
-
I have talked to a few drivers and they said the first few years suck but if you keep going to work and work hard ,your time will come.
-
That's about it. I worked 5 mediocre years then my time came. I hit top rate and all kinds of bid options seemed to be opening up at the same time.

does anyone know what starting pay is in michigan.thinking of about going to work for them.

has anyone heard of gray transportation? Know anything about them?

Kebo, JakeBrake- ya'll seem to be pretty happy! I too am interested in Con Way here in IN but worried my 45yo bones may think different!) Been quite a long time since one of my fingerprints wound up on a load! I understand paying dues, but if you need a "Pre-Trucking" body to start the journey with them, I feel I may need to pass. Don't misunderstand, I'm not lazy, just been 10 years since the manual labor gigs.
-
we've got "older" new hires in our barn, they do just fine. I myself am 39, and it's not too bad. city drivers do most of the manual labor( sorry jakebrake, hehe). most "manual labor" is done via forktruck. very seldom do we get hand freight # my trem. now, the term. you are applying to may be different.
mostly it's a mental job. knowing how to fit the most freight into a pup with minimal damage, driving several different trailer sizes in a city capacity, i.e. very tight docks.
are you interested in linehaul or city? -
City P/D doesn't sound appealing to me personally, so I would say my "goal" would be a night shift line haul gig. Location aside, and provided I get my foot in the door, what should I expect the first 2-3 years?
