Axe; the C-5 is the largest "US Military" cargo plane. The Russians built one that is larger--it was fondly called the C-5ski by US pilots. I flew a real man's airplane--the C-130 Hercules!

C-130 rollin' down the strip....
C-5's have a very distinct "whine" to them.....
A squadron that i use to be with, we took a C-5 to the desert once....after about an hr into the flight about 4-5 of us climbed down and asked the loadmaster if we could throw the football around....(only having 1 humvee, 2 baggage pallets, and an ISU-60 for cargo (not counting the 55 passengers upstairs) we were able to throw the football back and forth over the cargo pretty easily!! Passed the time thats for sure!
And when riding in a C-17, once it levels off in the air, just about every person will un buckle, roll out their sleeping bag and lay on the floor and fall asleep! I did for a 23hr flight to the desert once! That floor gets so cold, and yet be so warm in the sleeping bag, and the engines are like a soothing orcheastra playing to your ears...puts ya straight to sleep!! -
Oh and the C-5.....it can be loaded/unloaded from either end, unlike the C-17!!
The C-5 can also squat down to help with unloading angles.... -
-
C17 squats too.

Well, we know the height of the cargo bay. Seems like the tail end of the trailer would hit as they went down the ramp. Looks like a brand new 02-04 Volvo??
One question.... Where's the right wing??
Seems like you would be able to see it.
-
i forgot that it squats too...
I think its just the angle of the photo....but it does give the illusion that there isnt a right wing......good call sir!
Just goes to show, with enough thrust....anything can fly! -
Hell look at the A380 how that Brick gets into the air is beyond me. The Engines from what I have read are Undersized for it hence the Quantas Bird eating one on take off since it was at Max Thrust. Then you have the little Problem at Full load there is No room left for Cargo just Passengers BAGGAGE. So just how in the hell do those carriers make money with it.

You can fit two 53's on a C-5 when folded up for shipment.

MH-53J PAVELOW III Helicopters that is LOL
(Retired from the fleet now because of the CV-22 Ospreys)
Loaded them on C-5s a bunch of times for deployments out of RAF Mildenhall back in 95-98. -
Now your talking my language, I grew up around aircraft, coming from a family full of pilots, and even my Mom was in the industry as a flight attendant, and here I am driving a truck ... lol
But back to the C5 .... The one poster was correct, C5 is the United States biggest plane, Russia does have one bigger, if i'm not mistaken, that is the plane that is used in 2012, the one that crashes with all the cars...
Here is a little known fact about the C5 .. The cargo bay from nose to tail is 121 feet... Orville and Wilbur's first successful flight was 120 feet... It's been rumored that Lockheed designed it that way as a way to pay respect to the Wright Brothers and their achievement....
Can you imagine if they were able to see a c5 fly....lol
