I was taught that if the speed limit sign in a curve said 40mph, in a big truck you better be doing 20mph. But I learned how to drive hauling cows in them old trucks.
I had a loud mouth garbage hauler fly by me once on I-40 east of Kingman, AZ. I was passing another truck doing the speed limit and he came up on me real fast talking his crap on the radio and was calling me slow and to get out of his way. At the time I had a large car that would have left him but I don't drive like that anymore. I got out of his way as soon as I could and he went by hitting his train horns and was hauling ### again. He kept asking for bear reports and wasn't getting much of a response and wouldn't shut up. We were going down a long hill with a long steep hill ahead of us so I got on the radio and said their was a full grown heading west at the mile marker head of us and he shut that truck down in a hurry. When he didn't see a bear he started cussing on the radio and calling everyone idiots and such. He didn't know who pulled that on him but I passed him along with other trucks and it took him awhile to get up the hill and then hear he came again but the joke was on him and he had shut up.

Yep, I believe that particular mountain is called Black Mountain. I would love to take the scooter for a ride through there some day. Absolutely beautiful scenery.

What is the name of that river that flows through there ? I asked on the cb but never did get a response. Your right about the gps, I'm using a Samsung tab and has navigator on it. The road looked like a child did some squiggly lines on paper. I knew right then, I was in for some curves and rough terrain.
I started in some little town on the SC border. The company wanted me to go down through Atlanta over to Birmingham and up to Memphis. Which I think would have put another 100 miles on the trip. I decided to go up to I-40 and truck across. I did get a surprise on the terrain but I'm glad I did it. The scenery was worth it. -
Black mountain is quite a way east of the Gorge. The gorge is where you have the jersey barriers in the middle of the winding road with a 50mph truck speed limit and the tunnels. Black mountain is a one way mountian, its straight up then flat going west or flat then straight down going east with a 35 mph truck speed limit and a Mandatory pull over at the top for trucks to read the rules and the map.

Pigeon River. Wanna have a good time take a 34 in Sevierville and rent a bike and try the dragon tail or raft the river.
And it was originally a rail cut before a highway. Better they run slow than not run at all.
O/P you can not fix ignorance. You can ignore it and hope it is only themselves they remove from the gene pool.rookietrucker Thanks this. -
Wierd but no one ever calls me anything and I drive the speed limit or 5 over and take the curves at the posted speed all the time. I never hear squat. Course thet might have something to do with the fact I tossed out my CB about 3 years ago.

US30, in Warsaw Indiana, is a place where trucks are restricted to the right lane through town. Signs posted everywhere.
Cops there looove to write tickets for violating that law, and I hear it's a $750.00 fine. But it never fails, when you see a truck in the passing lane, and you tell 'em about it, you usually get a "mind your own business", "###### off", or similar.delta5 and TheHealthyDriver Thank this. -
I will throw my C.B. out the window...the FIRST time the on-off switch doesn't work..
And I do wonder.,I am a proud flat-lander.,still,I only get grief in Appalachia.,and not out west,on how fast I descend a mountain grade.?

It's the Pigeon River. That river dumps into the French Broad River which is one of three that create the TN River over by Knoxville. That lake you cross before I-81 is Douglas Lake which is part of the French Broad dammed up. The Pigeon intersects near it. One of these days I'm going to take a trip up there and fish Douglas Lake. It's suppose to be loaded with bass and crappie.rookietrucker Thanks this.

I have run I40 through the Gorge numerous times. I remember when they had wire mesh down the hill side to keep rocks from falling on the highway. They used to have crushed cars against it to. Will tell you flat out. That Gorge will get you. Familiarity breeds contempt and every time I went thru there I learned something new. The mist that comes off the Pigeon River will glaze areas of that road quickly. You can go from dry pavement to glaze in seconds. In the 70's and 80' there's no telling how many trucks wrecked going thru there tooo fast. It can be Hell with a top heavy load. Just a word of caution for those who haven't been thru it. Be Careful. That thing has bitten many a good driver in the butt. It's also a beautiful drive in the spring and fall. Be Safe.

they still have mesh up to keep stuff off the road, although everytime I go through there theres always new BIG rocks and stuff right on the side of the road....
