I've heard there are grants available for a person who wishes to go through the schooling and licensing to get their CDL. I've also heard about loans available, much like a student loan. I am very interested in finding either one of these as I wish to get my CDL. I have found nothing viable regarding either. Everything I've found in my research has been a dead end or an outright lie.
Are there grants/loans available and if so how does one go about getting one?
Thanks for any responses.

Go to the nearest Career Link office (unemployment) and The cdl school and ask the respective counselors. Yes it is that simple.
-
Check with your local state vocational school or community college, if they have a commercial driving program. They should have all the information. I am sure some of the private schools also have access to funds, but the state school should cost much less.

I've checked our Career Link offices. The one in Harrisburg flat out told me it was not possible to get any help that they know of. They stated that at one time it was available but that it has all been exhausted. Other Career Link offices, like in Carlisle for instance, have told me I would have far better success looking for a company to help pay for it as opposed to them. I even know drivers who did use Career Link in the past but apparently those days are no more.
In PA, at least at the colleges/vocational schools I've looked at, trucking/CDL is not considered an 'accredited course', therefore, it is not elligible for any student loans. I didn't know if there were other resources one could go through to get a loan for the schooling, i.e., something which the industry itself may fund. As far as grants go I have no idea where to begin with that. -
Most states have someone who coordinates the WIA program. I'd start ringing the phone. Here is some info for PA.

Yes it seems funds from Careerlink sources are all used up ..
Supposedly in July they again recieve funding ! but who knows .
I had recently jumped through all their hoops to try and get funding (WIA) Is what the funding comes from going through careerlink.
Come to near the end of all their (Requirements ) and they tell me No funding is Available! lol
All the grants you might find will lead you to some sort of college type courses and not anything for CDL Training , at least nothing i could find .
Had to resort to cash payment for schooling.
Good luck in your search .

You can get student loans at TDDS in Ohio. They have housing and it's pretty close to PA. And they'll drive you to PA to take your cdl test after schooling.

I'm attending Sage and had no problem getting a grant that paid for the entire thing.
-
Jnyxx, who did you get your grant through? I am currently looking for funding sources for school. The schools that i have talked to all said that there is nothing but private money available (local bank loans). And that the government loans wont work got trucking school.

Depends on what county in Pa. some still have funds other states differ also.
The counselors will lie to you so double check.
