Only in Texas! I say raise the speed limit and let natural selection run it's course. Has anyone given any consideration into the many commercial trucks that travel though Texas that are governed at less than 60 mph?

I guess some of them will have to slow down to reach that speed.

I remember when both Montana and Nevada had no maximum speed limits. It was "reasonable and prudent." Whatever the hell that means, and just who decides what is reasonable, anyhow????

My own personal opinion is that speed limits should top out at 70 MPH. But that is just my own belief.

90 mph in my BMW 3 series is reasonable and prudent.
90 mph in a 1978 Ford Pinto is not.

The irony is, and not counting experience... most American drivers had a MAX of 2-3 weeks in driver's ed..but in recent years, at least the past 10 years, parents can pencil-whip their kid's driving certifications before they test and get their license.

Although I'm from Texas, we lived in PA when both of my sons got their licenses, and all I had to do was sign a form inside their driver's manuals stating that I drove woth them for so many hours. Most yuppie styled parents are just too important and too busy to actually take time to drive with their kids..so their kids got a couple of trips around the block and a ride to the mall with mom and dad... and guess what - they're ready to get their license.

Even with truck driving school involved, most American truck drivers have a MAX of 3-4 weeks total in driver's training. I really don't think that 98% of Americans should drive at any speed like this - they're simply not qualified.

In case you wonder what I consider "qualified"..check out what a german citizen has to go through in order to become a fully licensed driver. I wish we had that level of training here in the states, but it would require everyone being able to read and pay attention... and show up for class.

I personally learnt to drive initially on wet clay then spent 2 years under the tutilage of several old truckers.

in AU the truck licence system takes only a sort period to obtain your light truck licence, but you can only apply for the next level up after 12 months experience.

reality of that is that it takes the average trucker out here 4 years to max their licences out.

It scares me seeing how easily most, both here AND in the USA obtain their licences.
