I have had the exact opposite experience at the Gary terminal. There were 3 of us to 2 trucks and I ended up with a little over 20 hours btw before taking my CDL exam. The instructors were great and took us to the DMV every morning to practice the skills test on the course we would test on. Then we would run the road test route. After that it was back to Indiana to drive down some fun little US highways and state routes with some fun 90 deg curves and lots of speed zones going trough little towns.

This weekhas been much better. Getting more driving hours behind the wheel. Practiced 90's today. First time in almost 2 weeks. Had a couple where I had to do a couple pull ups. Instructor asks: "what, did you forget how to back?" Had a terrific practice test run today until almost to the very end. On an exit ramp had problems getting down to 5th gear due to concentrating on a car behind me that I was not sure if he was going to let me in onto the exit (he was riding my rearend on my right). I kept the tractor moving but took 5(?) seconds to get it into gear while on the off ramp. Excepting for this, I felt like this run was my best yet. When I got back to the terminal, asked the instructor "how did I do; would I have passed?" He stated "very good except for that off ramp missed gear." I asked if the DOT testers would fail me for that. He replied "maybe, probably, depends on their mood." :biggrin_25510: All it takes is one mistake and it's "oops, see you next week for another try.":biggrin_25524:

Don't worry too much about that backing stuff, do enough to pass but just remember it's gonna get harder with split tandems. :biggrin_25525: Good luck sir. You'll be fine.
