My switch from Cobra 29 to DX99V

    I installed this Galaxy last week, and it sounds great I'm told. I'm still trying to adjust it just right though. I knew it was a huge step above the 29, but I believe it doesn't receive as well. I mean with a the gain all the way up I still have trouble picking up weaker radios more than.5 miles away..all though last night I did run with 2 others and we were spaced out 6 miles, but they also had big radios as well. Might be that I'm still thinking with my Cobra programed brain. Maybe I need to co-phase another antenna? I had my swr adjusted on the Wilson I've had for 5 years already.

    Most radios could use help in the receive and is a known weakness in Cobras imo. I wouldn't expect alot more in the receive department of that radio or any radio for that matter. But worse receive than a cobra isn't a good thing.

    What wilson antenna are you using?

    I too thought about going with dual phased antennas but then I'm back to mirror mounting which isn't desirable in my case or truck and not sure it would help a whole lot anyway.

    Galaxy 99's don't have all that good a receive...The radio is a older technology and the radios that replaced the 99's like the 93t, 94, 95t2 and the 98 all have different boards than what is in the 99's, and the receive in them is far better. You can try and have a receive Mod done to it and see if that helps any, but I wouldn't waist allot of money on it.

    I also wouldn't consider a Galaxy 99 as a "Big radio" either, if the radio is still basically stock, it has two 1969 finals in it, and will only do about 40w's...

    As for your antenna set-up, co-phasing two antenna's is probably not going to help your receive all that much, but one thing that could help your receive and transmit would be going to a different antenna than what your running now.

    Like if your running a 3' - 4' antenna...move up to something like a 6' or taller...This will help your signal more than anything you do to your radio...

    Also if your "Bull-Horning" your antenna's because of height restrictions. This also will put a kink in your signal...Antenna needs to be straight up and down, not tilted...

    Thanks for all the reply's. My 1 Wilson 2000 is straight up and down, and I thought the 99s had 50-60 watts of power?
    Tonight I believe I cleared up what my problem is, I can pick up someone father away, but if your next to me it sounds like your a channel off.

    Is the counter for sideband only or will it also help in the AM cb mode?
    I'm going to take it to 2 different shops tomorrow, one at the 240 exit on I-65 in In, and then confirm what was said at my home shop in Ohio off RT70

    SO far I'm unimpressed, and be be trading it in.

    I believe it's 10 watts max if I'm not mistaken.

    11 meter, and 10 meter are different.

    I was fooling around with the 99 while unloading in WI, and with the driver next to me talking, I was determined to flip every switch, turn every know till I figured out why it sounded so distorted up close, finally I flipped the roger beep switch and BAM it became all clear. Steel Rods CB shop said it had a pre-amp hooked up on it,,incorrectly.
    SO I swapped it it for a Galaxy 45, which I'm very satisfied with.

    The 45MP should do about the same watts as the 99 did, since it also has two 2SC1969 finals in it like the 99...Probably the biggest difference is no SSB or Freq. Counter. But if your anything like me, you probably seldom ever get on SSB anyway.

    One thing I like about the 45, is the Star-Lite face plate...

    Yeah I agree, its all I wanted ,with out the stuff I would never use, and the meter glows blue along with the face plate, and channel. I love it
