Try parking in well lit areas or as close to the building as possible when your in a truck stop *most* of the riff raff will be in the back or in the darker areas of the lot I've found...

As suggested above you might want to at least take a peak when someone is knocking....I used to just ignore the knocks until one Saturday afternoon in a PA rest area, long story short about three spots down from me was a truck fully engulfed in flames other drivers were trying to get us out of harms way thus the knocks.....true story

I would imagine the knocks in an emergency situation would be accompanied with shouts or yelling that "a tornado's coming" or "there's a truck on fire" or something of the sort.

It's a sad commentary on truck drivers - how a small percentage of drivers that have to buy ##### cause problems for the vast majority who don't. Supply of any commodity usually dries up when demand disappears.

You could try purchasing from the truck stops those stickers that say "no lot lizards" and place them right there where they knock and give that a try.

When I first read the O/P, my thought was "BS...this person is a poser." The only time I've ever gotten a knock on my door in the middle of the night (outside of a shipper or receiver telling me I'm done) was at a little truck stop in Las Vegas, NM. This old broad scared the crap outta me. Thought I was looking at an apparition. But I don't get bothered by lot lizards and such.

You must be parking in the wrong places.

As to lying in the bunk with the blankets drawn over your head: I hope you don't behave that way outside your truck. Just walk across the parking lot and into the building like you own the place. A little confidence goes a long way out here. If you are too afraid to even answer your door, perhaps a nice job in the dispatching office would suit you.

If you are curious who it is speaking here, look at my profile picture. I'm telling you this stuff from direct experience. I'm just a little broad running solo, too.

My friends pulled in a rest area around 9am only to find DOT working the upper end of the lot.They(husband/wife) got in the sleeper and closed the curtain, prefering to sleep until the "boys" left.DOT repeatedly knocked on the truck off and on all day,one time even surrounding it with their cars.My friends never opened the curtain when the DOT was around their truck but did actually speak to one at the vending machines. If I`m to be harrassed by knocks on my door,I hope its not the DOT.

Before you get trigger happy, I'd suggest you learn what the laws of lethal force are, particularly the bit regarding imminent threat of death, maiming injury, or rape. Pull a gun on someone who doesn't actually put you in such in a situation, then you've just committed an illegal use of lethal force - whether or not you actually pull the trigger. As a lifetime NRA member, CCW holder, and Type 1 FFL holder, I absolutely do not discourage firearms as a means of self defense. However, there's a lot more to it on the legal side than most people realize. Thus, it should be a last resort, and never an only resort. Additionally, firearms laws vary across states, and your Glock 17 with 17 round magazines may be legal in your home state, but not in New York, or New Jersey, of Mass, Conn, Cali, etc. You're only protected under the Firearm Owners Protection Act if the firearm is legal in both your home state and your destination state, and if it is transported in a manner proscribed by that state's laws on transporting a firearm.

That aside, I can only recall two instances where unsavory sorts have come knocking on my truck door, and both were at the same place - the Flying J in Raldolph, MO. First time was back during my time with Swift, when the most hideous lot lizard ever came knocking on my door - missing and discolored teeth, hairlip, etc - and I say this without exaggeration. I was parked on the little road going to the Blue Beacon. The second time was last month, and it was some delusional woman asking for cigarettes or money for cigarettes.
The one incident which actually resulted in a confrontation wasn't a lot lizard - it was a Bowman door slammer, who whipped around me and pulled into the parking spot I was backing into - as I was backing into it. I told him what a worthless piece of #### he was, and he approached me with a tire thumper after I'd parked. Little bit of pepper spray, and he quickly gave up on that notion.

Over time, you'll learn which places have bad reputations. I simply avoid going there. I won't stop in Jessup, for example. A bit of personal judgment is necessary at times.
