Crap! I forgot the Paccar engine in the poll and there is no way to edit the poll I guess! Anyway, let's hear from all the experienced drivers (company or O/O) on their experiences with their engines. Company guys, you may not know what something costs to fix, but you will know as well as anyone what the MPG is and how often something breaks.
I shamelessly stole the idea for a poll (from one 4 years ago) as a lot has happened since then and there are no current posts within the last couple years that even address engines in any useful way. Just the occasional whining about emissions is about it.
Yes, all engines are effected by individual users and environment, but we ought to be able to see a trend if enough people answer. I believe it would be a ton of help to people trying to make sound business decisions as far as engines. If your only factor is how cool you think you sound with Jake on, well that is different and this is of little use to you.
But if you are looking at business factors it would be a great help. Thanks!

You also forgot about Mercedes Benz motors,I have a MBE 4000 410 hp in my 2009 Freightliner .We have had nothing but problems with the regen in this thing,it's too bad too, because it's a nice tractor otherwise.
I had a 475 hp 3406 Cat and liked it much more. -

Currently available engines, or available in used trucks, too? There is a difference, and the newest Cummins big block has also been changed from what it was a year ago. Caterpillar is no longer available to order in a new truck unless you order a glider with one.
Regen has been a problem with most of the engines using the diesel particulate filter. I got the one I drive figured out, and it works okay, now, but I did have to take it to a technician once to get it to regenerate.Last edited: Apr 21, 2011

Most reliable: N-14 or Cat 6nz (tie)

If you go to mygauges you can search for trucks with identical specs with different motors and see plenty of general trends there.25(2)+2 Thanks this. -
