When will people learn to stop the frikkin shortcuts? Chock the wheels! People that are too lazy, or become compllacent because they've done something a million times... dang.
This is the third death of heard of in the past year because someone didn't chock a wheel. And if the mechanic was too dumb or complacent to do it, why wouldn't the truck driver have some common sense and suggest it?panhandlepat, bamanation, Giggles the Original and 1 other person Thank this. -
I have to wonder if there isn't more to the story. For example, instead of the mechanic asking the driver to go be sure the brakes were set so he could work on the trailer brakes, wouldn't it be more likely that he asked the driver to go release his trailer brakes? If he was actually trying to adjust brakes, that would make more sense to me.
old-six-pack and 48Packard Thank this. -
Right, makes sense, but the mechanic would know that the truck would have nothing holding it. Perhaps he assumed that the parking lot was level and it wouldn't roll?

What if this happened in a shop? I would think that an ASE certified and brake repair certified mechanic ought to know he needs to chock the wheels he works on brakes. The driver might not have even been there when it happened. He could have been in scalehouse pooper or on the phone.
Giggles the Original Thanks this. -
This is actually a workmans comp and OSHA issue. The mechanic was working for a shop at the time, on the clock. I dont see where the trucking company would be responsible. He was dispatched to correct and repair defective brakes, he should have taken the correct safety measures. Dont ask me to be on this jury...

Agreed there. but the reason he was there is because a trucking company wasn't compliant... there's blood in the water for the sharks, and (bless his heart, rest in peace), his family will likely see a huge payday because a lawyer convinces a jury it was someone else's fault.

According to the newspaper, the mechanic was an employee of the trucking company

When working on the brakes,
Do not allow anyone in the cab,
Do not rely on others to set/release brakes,
Chock wheels when not certain.panhandlepat and SLCTrucker Thank this. -
I have been doing this crap for 16 years, and I cant remember the last time that I have seen a mechanic use wheel chocks, in a shop or along the side of the road...
