if no boost leaks or exhaust leaks are found, the turbo/egr functionality test should be performed using cummins insite. i just replaced a turbo for low power, failed the test, the vanes were sticking causing low boost. no codes present. also the engine locks the vanes to the closed position to create back pressure when on lvl 3 jake setting to assist with braking.

I'm sure that was me. The engine had 2 broken exhaust manifold studs. Seems to be a problem with Volvo's. The 2 studs are closest to the fire wall. Replaced the studs and the problems went away.

It's in the shop's hands now....the head mechanic says to him it sounds like an exhaust leak somewhere and they will check it out. For the loss of power, I need to get it to the home office where they can run more substantial checks, as well as take it to the local Volvo dealer if need-be, and apparently it's much cheaper there in MT than here in SoCal

Found this thread about turbo making this whistling noise or by turbo. I have the same thing and they said i had exhaust manifold leak, fixed that, noise still on. And it doesnt matter with load or w/o, no loss of power i'd say...Thinkin I need a new turbo?

Where do you get your OVERHEAD ran at, cuz at every shop I have ever been to, the overhead is just adjusting the overhead. The CAC and other stuff you listed is extra prices.

Sounds like you have a hole somewhere in your charge air cooler. Have it pressure tested (costs 1/2hr labor) and I bet that's your problem. It is very common on the Volvo's with a ISX motor.

I ended up changing mine. Go to this thread for more info on this turbo. http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...143241-cummins-isx-holset-vgt-turbo-pics.html

I could feel a little bit of play in the shaft (by taking the boot off the front). Cummins said that was enough to make the blades touch the housing. Which would cause the noise. Mine also started leaking oil where the crank arm comes out of the housing for the VG mechanism. Here is a link to where you can get the troubleshooting manual for this turbo. Mine is the He551v. http://www.holset.com/mainsite/files...%20manuals.php
