13 vs 18 speed.

    correct me if im wrong here. a 13 speed is used on 1650 ft/lbs torque motors and an 18 is used behind 1850 and 2050 ft/lbs torque motors.

    cool. i was always wondering about the torque limit on the 13 and 18s. im goin to be buyin a newer truck and ive been seeing both 13s and 18s in the trucks.

    The 18sp isn't really necessary...I've got one and rarely, if ever, split the low gears. Bout the only time I do is in reverse to go that little bit faster.

    A lot depends on rear axle gear ratio - I got 3.36 and use them gears all the time

    And weight you pull around.

    I just found out there is actually no difference between the 1600 ft lbs and 1800 ft lbs 13 spd transmissions. The gears and bearing are the same.

    With the light loads that most seem to pull, that's true but not all trucks are running around at <90,000 lbs.

    Even with more weight most of the time splitting the lower gears is overkill. If I can pull 120k with 3.36 gears 24.5's and a 13 with no problems I can't imagine a guy with small tires or lower gears needs the 18.
