I have also been told this.
A day or so ago I was reading a thread here on TTF regarding rolling resistance. There were links to various charts listing rolling resistance of different brands and variants. What surprised me was that there some recaps listed that had low rolling resistance compared against virgin rubber.

Tires two worst enemies: heat and underinflation. So, 100 degree weather and 75 mph runs = blow-outs if running caps. And blow-outs if underinflated virgins too. Spend a little more, get virgin rubber, keep inflated to proper PSI, and slow down in 100 degree weather. You'll be fine.

I see no reason to go 75mph anyways, especially when fuel is this expensive. Just by going from 75 to 60mph you would save $400 a week on fuel costs and only add 3-4hrs onto your week. That's $100 a hr for extra seat time.... well worth it if you ask me.

    Mr. PlumCrazy Thanks this.

I don't do 75 everywhere I go I prefer to run 60 to 62 but we've hired a bunch of incompetent (####### got filtered) company drivers that are tearing trailers up and not writing them up or just not writing up problems at all and you find out too late..the shop time can really hurt. If I load Tuesday morning in KC then spend all day in the shop finally leave at 7pm and have a midnight Thursday app in Edmonton I gotta go... I don't do it often but its entirely possible for a crane to break, have to wait on product etc. If I have a choice between gouging on it to get unloaded or sitting 2 days waiting for the next appt... Im trading money for time.

I bought my truck with 8 caps on the drives. I never had a blowout on any of them. I keep the pressure at 110 to 120. They are wearing fairly quickly though. I pull a lot of 40k plus loads. I'm sure this is where the excessive wear comes from. Still for the price I believe caps are not a bad deal. I have found a salvage yard here in the town I live in that sells used tires. I got a couple of virgin tires there that is almost new and they only cost me $75 each. I had to pay a guy to mount them but he did it for free since I gave him the old caps that he took off. Now i have 2 virgin drives and 6 caps on the drives of my truck. They all are holding up very good.

The thing that causes all tires to fail is under inflation, over inflation and punctures. I have a nail in one of my caps right now. I'll leave it in there because I feel if I pull it out then the tire will start lossing pressure. Caps are not a bad thing like most people say. I would not prefer caps over virgins but I would not turn down caps just because they are what they are.

I run caps. I have been doing it for years never had one let loose. BUT I only cap my casings if they were ever run soft I do not cap them. I have never seen a loss in mpgs because of running caps its the tread design that causes the loss. I run heavy its not uncommon to be 100,000+ (permit) on 5 axles pulling a spread axle. The worst problem with caps are they tend to shake. The Michelins are better than the Bandags IMO as they run smooth.

A good casing + a good tread = money in the bank.

Here is the problem with buying someone elses casings that were capped. Cap your own and you won't have this problem

Seems you and the "illegal on a spread" guy listen to the same radio stations.

I just blew a 1.5 yr old VIRGIN 16ply Continental on my trailer. Tread came off and ate a mudflap/bracket. Bet the guys behind me are like you and swear it must have been a cap.:biggrin_25522:

gotta love the tongue and cheek comments...You know I believe everything I hear, especially on Z CB! Had a veteran flatbedder tell me that, it seems the regs does not support his theory, however it is good advice nontheless.

I come here to help sort out the BS, not add to all the misinformation I already get from talking to various people.:biggrin_2556:

Had a flat on a new Bandag cap, and they say they do the Xray before capping. They had put the cap over a nail in the casing! The damage a cap can do far outweighs that savings.
