Do you have a bypass filter krooser? What kind of mileage are you getting out of these engines million+ ? I been using rotella on 10K intervals but dont do any oil samples. Just rolled in new rods and mains and my mechanic said the inside of my motor looked good and clean the oil, at 11,000 miles still had transparency to it, siad keep on doing whatever I'm doing and I should be good for another 500,000 or maybe a million miles before overhauling... 985,000 on the clock now, C15 MBN no oil consumption new head at 760K...

That works good for the mega carriers leasing brand new trucks and turning them back into the dealer at 300k to 500k miles to be sold to some unsuspecting up and coming o/o. It's that guy who discovers all the costs and troubles from minimally maintained trucks that have never had the overhead ran etc...

Yeah you do know Cat doesn't even make filters? They have someone else do it but just paint them yellow and stamp Cat on them and charge a higher price. I can't remember off hand who actually makes their filters. I do think Cat has a spec they want but to me it isn't worth the extra cost.
I've had my best luck with Rotella. I tried to switch to mobil, which is to expensive and some other brands but the truck just used oil when I did it. I run mine up to 15k and have pulled oil samples just for the heck of it, they came back good and keep in service.
I agree with the minimally maintained part, but an oil sample is the same for everyone atleast for Cat. It plays no favorites for mega carriers. -

Yeah I didn't look into it too close but figured so, ever since the court ruling.that "synthetic" is a marketing term and not a legal description very few synthetic actually come form a true synthetic base...Im not surprised.07-379Pete said: ↑Kinda off topic here but you do know that Rotella synthetic your using aint a true synthetic oil? Always changed oil at speedco. It depends to which place u go. I went to OKC speedco couple yrs ago by Flyin J and they didnt not tighten the oil filter well and i ended up losing all the oil. Luckily i noticed it, put some just to get their next speedco and they filled it up and gave me a free truck wash since my frame and front of trailer was all in oil.
My fav place in Tooelo, Ut ex99. Last time changed oil + 1g of lucas cost me 250.00
I dont go in break room, i stay by my truck and watch em as they do it

If you really read the datasheets Shell Rotella T6 and Mobil Delvac 1 are the only two products that claim to be "fully synthetic." The rest are blends - Mobil actually states that the "Elite" brand is a blend, and from the Delvac 1300 data sheet, "Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 10W-30 and 15W-40 are formulated with a) optimized baseoil technology containing severely hydroprocessed base stocks..."07-379Pete said: ↑Kinda off topic here but you do know that Rotella synthetic your using aint a true synthetic oil? It's a blend. Don't kid yourselves about Mobil's product... they're using specsmanship on the advertising putting the synthetic products first so that you take the impression that the entire product line is synthetic. That's what ad guys do.
From Shell's website...
"Shell Rotella® T6 Full Synthetic oil features an advanced multi-functional, low-ash additive technology in a synthetic base oil..."

From Mobil's website...
Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40NaN
A fully synthetic, supreme performance, heavy-duty, diesel engine oil helps extend engine life while providing long drain capability and exceptional low-temperature performance.
Mobil Delvac Elite 15W-40NaN
A synthetic blend heavy-duty diesel engine oil that provides an outstanding level of protection in severe on- and off-highway applications.
Mobil Delvac 1300 SuperNaN
Available in a 10W-30 and 15W-40 viscosity, Mobil Delvac Super is an extra-high performance, diesel engine oil that helps extend engine life in the most severe on- and off-highway applications.
Mobil Delvac MX 15W-40NaN
A high-performance diesel engine oil that helps extend engine life in on- and off-highway applications. -
So are you running a bypass filter or not? You didn't say, and if so, what one are you using? And am I correct on the cost of the filters??? $75-100 for 2 new gulf coast fliters... then add the 3 gallons and you are at the cost of a std oil change at most places. I just can't see dumping the $1,000 on the system to do the same thing I can do w/o the extra cost.Krooser said: ↑I have been doing 50K oil changes since 2001 on three different engines.. two CATS and a Detroit.
My oil samples have always indicated that the lube oil is still up to the job and can go even longer... with one exception. Rotella T samples always came back with poor results... even after 10,000 miles. I was always a rotella guy (at least for 20 years) but I switched in '02.
My local CAT shop foreman advised me to use 'anything except Rotella' in my engines... that was a shock but I got an immediate good oil sample after I switched to Delvac. And my oil consumption went waaay down, too. Rotella may have changed their formula in recent years... I don't know. But my experience with it has not been very good.Click to expand...
Very interested in your oil sample results too, care to post the numbers? I may look into going a bit longer than the 15k I go now.
