Elderly Drivers

pulled up to a 4 way stop 2 or 3 days ago. stopped,looked left.large straight truck coming at a fairly fast clip.I turned right, looked in mirror,truck is on my bumper,didn't even slow down for 4 way stop.I could see the driver fairly well,looked to be about 35.so don't think they are going to stop even if they are supposed to,and even if they are YOUNG

 

I spent about two years trying to get my wife and her sisters to pull my father in laws license. Didn't happen. I saw some of the signs. One was damage to his garage door that he did not want to admit. Another was a minor accident that he blamed on a truck, but the story didn't match the evidence. I found out later that he was hiding accidents by trading in his damaged car for a different one. As near as I can tell he had maybe four accidents before the final one that got his license pulled. The best I can say is no one got hurt.

Family members get really wrapped in denial about elderly parents driving. Some of it is out of pride "Look he's in his 90's and still driving!" and some is from having to drive them every where if they lose that license, and elderly people seem to have endless doctor appointments.

We just had an fatal accident near Arlington Washington where a truck rear ended a car at 3AM. The car had an elderly couple (I think the driver was 84) that either stopped or was driving very slowly in the right lane on the freeway. The truck driver was unable to stop in time. I don't have enough information to make an informed opinon about how at fault the truck driver really was. As an aside, it bothers me no end that new cars will have there headlights come on whenever the car is being driven, but not the tail lights. It really fools some drivers into thinking that their lights are on, when they are not.

We have just started rolling the baby boomers into retirement, over the next 10 years or so the number of senior drivers (65+) is going to more than double.

 

They fear loosing their independence - the trick is showing them that they're becoming a danger to themselves and others. If dementia has already set in, its unlikely you'll be able to reason with them.

 

Elderly drivers ? HEY ! I RESEMBLE THAT !

Really? So if Osama Bin Laden had lived to a ripe old age you would have respected him,for no other reason than he is elderly?

I don't believe in treating people in a particular way just because they belong to a particular group.

Respect for me is deserved based on individual action,not on which group you belong to,especially when belonging to that group has more to do with things one has no control over.

Young ##### h###s grow up to become old ##### h###s,and do not automatically get my respect because they reach a certain age.

 

No more scary to me,than older drivers,driving big trucks,who do not know how to drive them.

Off course,as far as some people are concerned, people of a certain age are perfect and can do no wrong, and it is only the younger generation who are the cause of the world's problem.

Older drivers can even return positive drug test,and people give them the benefit of the doubt,simply because they are 'not young'.

 

I guess it's human nature to insult people you disagree with.

What makes that person a loser?

 

Bet if you had said some young kid had done that to you,your post would have had 20 thanks under it.
