Redoin my front drive axle again so gotta go....was just observing what I see as a new and not good trend with these training outfits. They got gizmos but no horse sense...their paperworks all in order ,but safety suffers. Yet this is our future. We need to get better training in place or this industry will be seriously screwed...one size does not fit all,and if the companies and the regulators can't see that; then they need to pull their heads out of the body cavity it's stuck in

That one was a 1964. I bought that truck when it was 10 years old for $6,500 and off I went...It has long since been scrapped.

I prefer to be "spoken to" by someone that has a clue what they're talking about!
Have you ever driven a truck?
Have you ever even ridden in one?

I doubt it...Based on you assumptions about what we can or can't do in this particular situation, If you ever rode in a truck, You weren't paying much attention!

The fact that you don't know what the difference is concerning who's speaking to me about this speaks volumes!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll state that I feel that I'm as qualified as the next guy to have a safety discussion with a driver. Are there things I could learn? Sure, but I'd be more worried about someone that said no.

I'm sure that you feel that way...I disagree!

    Volumes...

I've been out here a long time and have over 4,000,000 verifiable miles without a chargeable accident and NO tickets in the last 20 years.

I learn new things all the time because there's always something new to learn...But with all due respect, I seriously doubt that you with no truck driving experience at all have much to contribute to my ability to operate my truck in a safe manner.

The very basics would be a good place to start, for you and that student Elendil both.

I can see what your saying but let me be clear,,,,the problem is the attitudes of the "drivers" and companies involved. The drivers had an" I dont give a ####,it's your problem" attitude and the companies were almost as bad. It helps no one when these carriers get a heartbeat in the seat attitude( they want anyone they can get to pay the fees to be trained and they cull very few). They are the talent pool for the future. o/o and lease folks do it too but not as much as these mega carriers.
A stronger standard must be used,or the feds will get worse than they are now with black boxes, speed limiters and such. Look to the north, specifically Ontario, for the results of these actions. It has not reduced crashes,so the governing body wants more restrictions on CMVs with failed science and bad policies leading the way. Our mindless leaders will eventually follow suit, then what? The end of the independent...not due to saftey violations but being regulated out of existence. Look at Melton...about 2500 trucks, negotiated discounts and volume discounts on every item from suppliers, including OEM manufacturers, but they have publicly called for more restrictions on small carriers to "level the playing field". ????? how level is level-evidently when the competition is legislated away. Gotta go. my buddy will be here in a few hrs with my parts and I need to be aware in the early AM (wrestling a 350lb gearset into place in your sleep can be hard on the fingers)

Thanks it's been a good discussion. I agree with KyBigJim for the most part. "Safe" is a relative term, and until industry standards improve not much will change. The problem there probably lies with the carrier, but it's not just mega carriers. It's any carrier that puts $$ before doing things the right way. New driver, "experienced" driver, office dweller, it hardly matters some people do things the right way and some people don't. If you want things to improve standards need to be set and if you don't meet that standard, well it's been real. I'm sure the president of my fan club will suggest that I don't meet the standard and that's cool. Be safe out there.

I think there may be something many have not considered--and that is overall driver training--who is training today's kids? What does it take to get an operators permit today--Now I am not singling kids out--but--when today's children have been watching Mom/Dad--texting/talking--etc--Then they get behind the wheel in High School--these are today's future truck drivers--Face it there has really been NO serious driver training(in terms of 1st time drivers)in over a generation--driver ed was one of the first things most school systems stopped when budgets started being cut. IMHO--many new younger truck drivers--are untrained car drivers--and although the CDL training requirements get tougher--many of these drivers have no basics to start with--add the whole ME generation into the mix--well you get the picture--of course I am generalizing--but I think the entire driving situation in this country needs to be re-addressed--and yes I know there has ALWAYS been bad drivers--but again IMHO--we are at least one generation(if not more into)poorly trained drivers--now training newer drivers--and the legislative thing is now(trying)to be used to fix this problem--being pushed(read lobbyed--paid for)by the insurance industry. SO I feel the entire state of driver training needs to be revisited--and driver training starts when your kid is old enough to pay attention to how you are driving.

I dont know about your answer to the man. Im looking at 27 years of him driving. Im giving him benefit of the doubt. I was downtown Chicago last Friday, and you can see in plain sight, this Spanish kid in the middle lane, cuts to the right, 3 lanes across, to try and pass everyone, in which he is in a lane that now is a right turn only, and then at the last minute cuts in front of another car to get back over. These kids driving big trucks, are going to get hurt, and hurt someone else. Enough tickets, they will be off the road, because insurance companies will charge the company lots of money to insure them.

I would agree getting any class license is far to easy, and way to hard to lose.
