Count your self good because a lot of my mechanics couldn't do it.

The replacement bolts are S/S even harder to drill if you decide to drill Cat makes a plate that bolts to the head so drilling is spot on.Cab location makes it difficult(best way) to weld nut to stud on 5-6 exhaust.Cat also makes a keen sert for those who screw up the holes.
-
you got lucky, I just did a set that had 8 that had been put in backwards and 6 were broke flush, took a full day drilling and had to use a mini die grinder to bore the studs, then take the threads out with a pick
.
Almost quit that day -
Don't use the S/S ones!
Put in backwards??? -
One end of the stud is a taper lock thread design........the taper end goes in the head and more closely matches the way the threads are cut in the head so it bottoms out and tightens on the threads and not by jamming the end of the stud in the bottom of the hole as it run out of thread. If installed correctly they need to be torqued to 27 lb-ft, if they're in backwards............you'll be cussing to get them out, along with throwing tools and wishing you could KILLthe sob that installed them
-
Guess I missed the tapered lock thread part. I'm gonna guess its the end with the Y stamped in it?
It doesn't matter to me I never put mine in all the way anyhow..... less drilling to get them out....
-
It sounds like there is a lot of experience out there and it is the Y end that goes into the head. Don't forget never seize it helps with removal and installation. After 10 years of experiencing at least 2 broken studs in just about every head gasket repair job I had you learn every trick in the book and what not to do also.
-
It would be easier replacing the head than drilling them studs out!
-
Use a left handed drill bit it will spin out you wont drill it out they are hardened bolts
