It should get better for him but you should never count on a set amount of money coming in each month.

Have him stick it out for a little while and at least get six months in. Sometimes you will have bad weeks back to back as it just happened to me but the next week made over $1000.

Give it some time and he really needs a better truck that is if Swift has them.

It takes time to get going in trucking. A driver really shouldn't expect good paychecks for at least 6 months. It might happen, but don't expect it. And a new driver usually gets the worst truck around. After all, why would any company give a new truck to an inexperienced driver?

Recruiters and schools talk up how much money someone can make at trucking, but it is a load of hooey. This is not a well paying career, especially for a fellow with a family. Yet too many don't find that out until after they have a school loan and a lot of time invested.

Just as an FYI, I've been trucking for 5 years, and have never grossed over $40,000 yet. For a first year, $30,000 is a reasonable expectation.

Ok. The brakes going out on the truck is a bit over the top. But why did the trailer brakes catch on fire? I'm not blaming anyone, but I've never seen or heard of that happening under normal driving conditions on flat ground. Has he had similar problems before? If so, tell him to stop resting his foot on the brake pedal and slow down before going down a hill. Use the jake to ride down the hill. If he's constantly on the brake pedal, he's going too fast. Also, people who follow too close are more inclined to over-use the brakes. Maybe increasing the following distance will help.

If his brakes went out, why was he sent o Greer in the first place? No brakes=no go in my book. Tow the sum-b***. I won't move a truck with questionable brakes.

As to other problems with the truck, they are not detailed out here. There is no way to tell what happened when the truck shut down because you don't say how it was behaving or whether any lights came on.

He needs to be on the phone daily with his DM and going to the window asking about loads at least twice each day. He needs to squeak louder to be taken care of. In a company as large as Swift, you have to make yourself known. In a polite way.

I understand you want to support hubby. A good wife stands behind her man and backs his play. I'm not married to him, so I don't have that obligation. As I see here, you are a good wife. Keep up the hard work.

From what I understood, and please forgive me if I don't have all the details correct because I am not mechanical, but on the trailer brakes, an air line for the brakes ruptured which caused the other brakes to overcompensate and lock up. On the tractor, one of the brake pads was 1/4" away from the brake drum, so it wasn't making contact when he hit the brake pedal. He was informed neither of these was his fault. He is a VERY careful driver...in his words, he drives like Grandma. He knows he has a family to get home to. No, he doesn't ride the brakes and he does use the jake brake. When I went to pick him up from the terminal one day, he was on ME because I was following to close...he was nervous as a cat...LOL!

Don't know much else about the other problems, just that it shut down out of the blue, and Freightliner couldn't find anything wrong with it. So far this week, it it running fine.

He finally got a preplan, and is on his way home.....in a roundabout way...but nevertheless homebound :)

His DM and FM have been awesome...constant communication......he likes the company and the miles are there..it just seems like he hasn't been able to get rolling because of these other issues....Hopefully it was like I said..just a rash of bad luck and now that's all out of the way. And honestly, I don't think it would be much different somewhere else.... Different place = different issues.

Injun, I've been following your posts here for several months and you have been a big help to the newbies like us....and I say "us" because I am learning that it's not just all about the driver, but involves the support of the entire family. Thank you.

The trucks not that old, 2009, 250K-ish miles or so on it....hopefully got the bugs worked out of it. And the inside is really clean and in decent shape.

Freightshakers in 09 were full of bugs. I had a brand new Cascadia that still had bugs when I turned it in with 240K miles on it. Part of the problem I had was the last generation of 60-Series Detroits had a weakness in the head due to the additional porting and excessive exhaust recirculation heat from the DPF system. The repair was worse than the initial problem due to all the leaks it caused.

If the truck behaves itself, hubby should do just fine. It's good to get the BS out of the way at the beginning. That way, it'll even out for him.
