If you have hazmat you would need to retest that but that is the only thing.
-
Thats good then, but that hazmat is a real pain in the you know what
I have hazmat but maybe its just better to drop it. With all the nonsense you have to go through, the one or two cents per mile just doesnt seem worth it. Especially when you only get that pay if your under a hazmet load. Thanks for the reply
claredog1 Thanks this. -
Most states are going to require you to retake all of the written tests....
Drivers License (same as for a car)
Motorcycle (if you ride)
CDL General Knowledge
Combination Vehicles
Air Brakes
...as well as any endorsements you might have...
HazMat
Tanker
Doubles/Triples
Passenger
Illinois started requiring a SKILLS test too a few years back....doesn't matter if you've been driving 20 years, if you move to Illinois you better have access to a truck or you'll lose your Class A. Not sure if other states do that as well, but you might want to look into that before you move. -
Yeah, every state's different. I moved from Ca. to Az. in '06. Just had to pay a fee, etc. No tests of any kind. But, things could be different 5 years later. I'm currently back in Ca. with Az. CDL. Not wanting to deal with Ca. DMV, but if I do, I believe I'll have to take written tests again.

I moved from ga to sc to va back to sc and every time I had to take hazmzt and nothing else last move was in 04, maybe things did change not sure just call the dmv and they will tell you.

When I started out 10 years ago, I went to school out of state. To do that, I had to transfer my Illinois drivers license to Indiana.
Tests required:
Indiana Operator Written (driver's license)
Indiana Motorcycle Operator (to keep my motorcycle endorsement)
Then came the school requirements:
CDL General Knowledge
Combination Vehicles
Air Brakes
HazMat
Then there were the tests I took just for the heck of it because I sat at the license bureau for 3 hours waiting to take my motorcycle operators written test (they didn't have those at the school...a 3rd party test site):
Tanker
Doubles/Triples
Passenger
Of course once I completed school and passed the skills test, I had to drop the passenger endorsement because I had not tested in a passenger vehicle.
So then I took my Indiana Class AM CDL with TX endorsements back to Illinois, where I got to retake the written tests:
Illinois Operator (driver's license)
Motorcycle Operator
CDL General Knowledge
Combination Vehicles
Air Brakes
HazMat
Tanker
Doubles/Triples
Eventually, I got a job driving school & city buses...so the Passenger endorsement (with a restriction that it's only good through class B since I took the skills test in a class B vehicle) on my license.
For a while, though, there wasn't much I couldn't drive legally...as long as I wasn't trying to pull a 10,001+ rated trailer behind a passenger vehicle, I was licensed to drive it.
Then I dropped HazMat...too much hassle and it just wasn't worth it.
There was one guy I went to school with that got kicked out. Took him 9 tries to pass the Indiana Operator's test (in other words, if he had moved to Indiana and wanted to change his CAR license over...). Then he had flunked the CDL General Knowledge test 3 times. School finally said "You're done" and sent him home.
I guess that's why I'm a little shocked to find that there might be some states don't require at LEAST the written tests. I know with all the BS surrounding CDL's here in Illinois, it would make sense that they'd be a little stricter these days (thus requiring the skills test, too, now)...but this is the first I'd heard that some states let you transfer a license without taking even the WRITTEN tests.
In my experience, the states I've dealt with required the written tests even for a car license.

You'll have to retake haz-mat and pay for a new finger print check. Really stupid how many times do you need my prints?

3:VA Volunteer
4:Haz-Mat
And every time you renew with haz-mat in TN you get to retake the test and pay for another background check thank you FMCSA -
Of course the easiest way would be, instead of posting on a message board where nobody knows the answer (just look at the wide ranging responses), google the phone number for the DMV in North Carolina and CALL them directly and get the correct answer.

I'm a newbie to the site, so please forgive me if I did not post in the right spot. I have 15 years driving in my county & surrounding counties hauling feed, but I must complete schooling now to obtain my Ohio CDL. Once obtaining my CDL & sometime the beginning months of 2015, we will be moving to TX. Does anyone the law in Texas? Do I have to retake the test or do I just transfer them?
