Wonderful sloppy morning at the Lexington Meat patch.
Geez I hate that place when it rains! (Waterloo, too)
Hooked trailer, found two missing mudflaps and both mudflap mounts bent into the tires. Took three hours to get someout to fix it. It was so sloppy I couldn't get enough friction to slide the tandems. Finally got a 4/4 to brace the tires.
So with all this screwing around, had to stop here at the Iowa 80. Would be short a half hour to make delivery to Ottawa. Load isn't due until 0600, but they'll take it anytime.
Then from Ottowa?
Quien sabe! -
Waterloo is putting concrete in the entire place!!! help with the mud, but the plant manager says they will still have a drainage problem...
Made my 0800 delivery just north of downtown Boston, with only 1.5 hours on my 70, and I informed dispatch that is what I have, and that I will be using that to move to a safe haven to do a 34 hour reset... Only get 2 hours back on Friday... reset will be done at 7pm friday... #### if they did not dispatch me onto a load picking up in New Jersey, going to Waco TX... not exactly home either... But it is my fault I was dispatched, as I put the date as today, on my emtpy call... showing I had 10 hours on my 14.. which was true... But I also told them on the arrival call, only have 1.5 on my 11, and put it in the comments that I was short of hours...
And it looks like I once again picked the wrong direction to head... since there are no truck stops near boston, and I could get no answers yesterday, I thought maybe a yogurt load to Denver or Cheyenne... so I headed north... also this direction traffic would be light...
Oh well, I am parked under some trees, getting ready to enjoy a nice cool day here in Greeneville New Hampshire... No QC signal either... so it will be quite... -
We'll probably pass each other.
Leaving out of here with a load bound for Chelsea.
Good news about Waterloo.
Now if they could only do Lexington! -
Hey, guys,
I have been reading the aviary and thought you could help me with suggestions.
I want to drive for Stevens Trucking Company. I have been a stay at home dad for the past ten years and a full-time professional writer, though I have made little money at it. I am currently working for a company in Dallas but do not find myself fulfilled. I do have extensive past work experience as a high school teacher and surveyor before I did my stint as a stay at home Dad, though.
But now that the kids have grown I am eager to pursue a new career path. I contacted Katrina Spencer and she said I would not be approved for the loan because I have not paid any federal tax for the past three years.
I wanted to know why my lack of work experience for the past three years would be a hindrance with possible employment, and she couldn't give me a direct answer. I am 51, have no arrest record or anything like that, and my drivers license (non-CDL) is current, and I have no known health problems. My wife is an actuary and makes $70,000 a year, and we file jointly. We have a very solid credit rating so there would never be any problem paying back the trainee/CDL loan. As far as that goes we can pay it off at once.
I really want to work for Stevens and I can't understand why I am being dinged because my wife and I decided I would stay home and raise our kids as a father since she was bringing home the bacon. I have heard Stevens training is top notch. Should I try to go with another Stevens recruiter, or maybe look into another company?
I am open to any suggestions and/or advice you may have. Thanks for your time, I appreciate any help you can throw my way!

Budoken,
If you can afford to pay for the schooling before going to stevens, do that, that way you are not beholden to them for the "loan". Stevens requires 3 years of verifiable work, as do all trucking companies... a federal law that they have to verify your work history for the last 3 years... don't blame stevens, blame the stupid federal government in the most regulated industry.
Now I do know some others on here have had to deal with this, and maybe when they see your question, they can chime in too. -
Budokan,
The trouble is you've been self employed. You need to prove you have been working (writing) during that time. Do you have any receipts from publications showing you've been paid? What you need to do is prove you've been working.
As for the loan approval, understand that's a whole different program. Stevens is paid by the government for each student it puts thru training. The qualifying student must be one that has a previous work record, showing they're helping 'put people back to work'. If you don't show previous working experience, you don't qualify for that loan. It has nothing to do with your credit rating.
Now you say you haven't paid tax for the last three years. Do you file jointly with your wife? If so, you've paid.
But TLea is right. You're best to go to an independent school, get your CDL, then apply to Stevens. You should have no problem being accepted for orientation. -
Thanks for the help, guys, and explaining things in a way I can understand how they work., esp. the loan approval program. Yes, I do file jointly with my wife, so I do know I have paid taxes for the past 3 years but I couldn't seem to make the recruiter at Stevens understand that.
I do have some receipts but not many. My last big pay for writing was in 2005, a little further back than I need. As for an independent CDL school, I've been looking but haven't found a good one here in the DFW area yet. I'll keep doing some research, though. Thanks for the advice! -
And I never meant to imply I was blaming Stevens for anything. I wasn't blaming them as much as I was feeling frustrated. I just wanted some stuff clarified and you guys came through like troopers for me, so thanks again!

Good luck Budokan. Look for a PTDI school, 3 listed in texas, one is near Waco.
I was planning on doing a 34 hr reset, since I had so few hours for today, exactly 2.25. But it paid to answer my phone this morning, even though it said private number..
It was the dispatcher for the northeast region, needing help... He said he showed me 30 miles from a shipper, and they had dispatched an owner/operator onto the load yesterday, but he never acknowledged it, and this morning refused the load... Picked up in Newburyport MA, and went to Fogelsville PA, a short hop, but puts one into a much better freight area... Now I am to pick up a preloaded trailer, drop my trailer in the door, and then head for the repower in Sturbridge MA... I answered, okay, but then I need some help too.. need to get home to WY... First response, that will be difficult from MA. Why not a hershey load to Ogden UT then? That is a possibility, yea I have one preloaded, that you can pick up Saturday... but (I knew there would be a but), will have to get the deadhead miles approved, as they are to many for a hershey load..
Do the best you can, I say, as I am filling up the refer tank, to drive the 20 miles south.. arrive, swap trailers, and hitail it out of there... can't afford any traffic jams...
And I pulled into the Pilot with 3 minutes to spare...
My phone rings again, good job and hustle... Here is your load home, and thanks for your help. So I know I will be home on Tuesday...
Will be looking to repower this Ogden load in Cheyenne WY tuesday Morning....
So another ride across the turnpikes on 80...
May even wave again at emulsified as we pass each other.
