Split breaks are confusing and are the most frequent log violation. Use it sparingly and only if you know what you're doing. If not, just take a 10 and reschedule the pickup or delivery.

    cliffb7 and Meltom Thank this.

that's what I tell everyone that works at my company. #1 try to reschedule, #2 try to relay, #3 take the late hit, #4 attempt split sleeper.

Actually, you cannot dismiss a 10 hour break "off duty" as being invalid.
It depends on where and how it was taken.

If you were off duty and away from the truck, it counts.
You cannot take "sleeper berth" and not be in sleeper without lying about your location.
    Thus falsified logs.

Under their own rules, you have to allow "off duty" unless it can be proved you didn't "rest".

Drove for 13 hours? Logged 4 on duty? Why?

Huh? Who is "dismiss(ing) a 10 hour break 'off duty' as being invalid"?

The info in the first post is a training example, probably from the FMCSA, to show when in violation. The OP just wanted to know if his notes were correct. Which they are.

    cliffb7 Thanks this.

    God that's a terrible example!

First off where's the PTI? That alone would get you in trouble at most places.

2nd who the hell logs a live unload? (flatbeders:biggrin_25517:) hush you! That's what I pay lumpers for. I pull up to the dock and let the fork jockey's do the work, all I do is open the doors, check securement when they're done and close the doors. (at least on paper :biggrin_255:)

If I'm "off duty" I'm doing my own thing,,, and if my own thing is lifting weights,,,, say a 40# box,,, or twenty. Then that's what I like to do (but more often I'm in the bathroom). And that's all the nice officer reviewing my logs needs to know.

All the examples posted on the FMCSA website are awful.
