Was that by one of the sponsoring companies?

As mentioned above, applied to whom ever you wish.

Now me personally, I wouldn't waste my time calling or appying until I had my CDL in hand. Just focus on doing great in class. I remember back in class people would call around in our down time and everyone of the companies they contacted said call back when you have you licence. Once I got my CDL, I applied for four different companies one day and the fourth one said I had the job basically on the spot turning in my application...two of the other companies called a couple weeks later. FYI: I'm working in the oilfield so OTR will probably be different.

Call or email Leona Wise, May Trucking, talk to her. Her number is
    800-547-9169 ext. 3016, leonaw@maytrucking.com
Also, the Phoenix May Trucking Operation Center is on Durango Street just off of and west of I-17. Cynthia Chiari would be more than happy to talk to you.

I am taking just the Truck driver as I already have my Cdl and mostly need the endorsements and the shifting studies. SO the class will be 4 weeks long with the extern-ship to follow. I drove a straight truck and pulled a 34 foot backhoe trailer, also drove water trucks, some have told me the longer trailers are easier to back up than the short ones. :biggrin_25523: I hope that is true. Once I get that double clutch down I should be good to go. Went by there Friday with my kids and checked out the location and trucks in the yard. Seems like a decent place and so far they have been pretty nice. Just was a little disappointed with the ad I saw this morning in the paper. They never mentioned they recruited for those other companies and never offered me those apps. Thats okay now with the help of my new friends on the forums I know how to handle that.

It is your life and career, its best to take control of it for yourself.

Don't worry about double clutching. You only need to know it well enough to pass the state test. After 1 week with my trainer at KLLM he told me, "OK, quit using that clutch".

I floated the gears on my upgade road test after my 6 weeks of training. The tester never said a word about not double clutching...

My trainer told me it is easier on your knee, for one. And easier on the equipment, if done right.

I like to float as well, and it certainly is easier than double-clutching, BUT.......I watched a DVD put out by Eaton where they specifically say that floating is harder on the tranny that double clutching. Even when done my the most experienced driver.

OK guys and Gals I will have to keep that in mind regarding the floating, clutching etc.. The other thing I see on here are some of the people saying you need to watch the speed and rpm's to shift at the correct time. Is that true? I think you should be able to hear it in engine and tranny that is is time to change gears, you know that feeling you get just before a summer rain, the smell in the air LOL!

The only reason I am waiting until July is I am going to spend a little family time with the kids now that they are our of school. We are going camping in the white mountains for a week and do some fishing. I know that once I am in this program we have a hard road ahead as far as quality family time for at least a year.

I am ( later on ) considering O/O but will not make that choice until I have done my year or there abouts. Hopefully the economy will level out and perhaps the fuel prices will lower. The way I see it on here that is what is making it the hardest for O/O. Sounds like there is plenty of freight if you are willing to work.

Anyway I am looking forward to this new career thanks so much for all your insight and I am sure there will be more when I return. :biggrin_2559: Thanks

In trucking the better approach is to find an employer and then go to the school they suggest. Only some trucking companies hire with zero experience and these newbie-hiring companies often only hire newbies from certain schools, so you don't want to waste your time going to a school your employer won't recognize.

Try Fleet Directory. They have a few companies listed in your area.

Wow thanks I did find a few companies that I wasn't aware of in the Phoenix area. Some of them actually say they will consider new graduates. Thanks for the input and good suggestions.
Still need admins to let me know where I can start my thread regarding school and training. Thanks again all I'm glad you are here!
