" One thing that always intrigues me is these little handheld comunicators that you can get in most any hunting supply store or hardware store. I have a set of these and they can easily reach out 20 miles and have features on them that no CB has "

You are talking about FRS/GMRS radios and they WILL NOT go 20 miles unless you are talking mountian top to top :biggrin_2559:

That said the problem with CB is the FREQUENCY it is on a prime DX band not a point to point band like GMRS or MURS is on.

MURS which is VHF CB is a nice start but the FCC restricts it too much but even restricted like it is you can get up to 10 miles base to the car.

You are correct the FCC could give a rats-butt about EXPORT radios and 99.999% of us hams don't care either as long as they stay off the ham bands it's not my problem .... HAMS who go after CBers who are on CB just seem to me to have way too much time to kill.....

IF the makers of these sets set them up that if they cover CB they could not cover the ham bands that would solve many of the intruder problems MOST of them caused by the CH19 band E-F useage by people who know nothing about the radio .........

Now unlike many of the HAMS who gron and moan I use CB to talk to several friends who do not have a ham license we all run legal stations
My case a old 4 watt midland that is now dieing in the car ...... but we are on about 5am so no one is around anyway ....

Crazy as it sounds the FCC REQUESTED input from CBers a few years back about what they would like I never heard any more or if they responsed to any input ....

I still have several of my CB radios from the 60's i need to recap one day ...

You are 110% correct!!! How can they do this and yet it could be so much more utilized in the trucking industry. Think of some areas out there, where the CB can only go so far, but yet it is so much further to reach someone. Seems like a big safety factor here???

HD_Renegade (the Original Poster who started this thread, BTW) wants a new Hybrid CB for truckers. WA4GCH told him how to get it.

    Where's the Hi-Jack?

Yeah it would be nice if the person who does the 11 meter conversion on a 10 meter radio, would just hard wire up the band switch to only work on the 11 meter band. Or better yet if the buyers of the 10 meter export radios would take the time to learn what the band switch is for.

This is the first I've ever heard this. For all the FCC cares CB radio can just go die. Even though it's a useful tool for truck drivers and vacationers. I still wonder why the class E CB radio petition was shot down. But yeah you'd think in the year 2011 they'd at least advance the technology on a CB radio. Guess they figure the trucking industry is too small to bother with. Maybe they should remember if they bought something most likely a truck brought it.

Well I have used these things up too 20 miles. From Here in Grafton to out past Park River ND which is about 20 miles. We carried them in the gravel trucks and had one back in the shop here in Grafton. We also used them in the parts truck for when we would send someone for parts. Just gave them a shout if we forgot to mention something.

One thing to note is that they are line of site just like a mobil CB is. Hills etc effect them just as much as they do CBs.

Not sure if you are talking about these as CB radios or not but I was not talking about them as CB radios to be used on the CB frequencies.

I would love to see these in a dash mounted setup hooked to the vehicles power source and a hand held mic.

Kinda like the old business band setups. They used to be all over around this area. Farmers had similar setups in all their tractors etc. Now it is a dead thing around here since no one uses it anymore due to cell phones.

Anyway, as far as radio choises. Well the cobra 29 is a good choice, get an RFX75 installed correctly and it will do most anything you want with a little extended range.

If you want more then go with a regular CB setup to run a small amp. You can turn the amp off for when you don't need it and turn the amp on while on the road.
