Well some of us have husbands who don't like us to do the grubby part. Seriously. Could I do it? yes. Would I do it? yes. Have I done it? yes Does he like it when I do? NO. And so I sit behind the wheel and allow others to believe I'm a prima donna, but HE is happy and that's what I care most about.
However, back to your original post and questions.
Welcome to the industryFancymcberry, Truckernurse, inkeper and 1 other person Thank this. -
Texas-Nana THANK-YOU!
I appreciate your honesty and straight forwardness. I am sure my husband would rather I didn't pull on the tandems or have to put my own chains on the tires when I get to that point. That being said he understands that I have to do what is required to get the job done.
He has asked me on several occasions are you sure this is what you want to do? With the economy like it is and me having spent the last 16 years working for a gas utility company with a monopoly for the state of Az. There isn't a place for me to go and get another job in the industry. I have been looking for work for the last 7 months to no avail. So about 2 months ago I started looking at becoming a driver. I have a class A cdl, but the local companies want you to have OTR tractor trailer experience just to deliver locally. Construction is down, almost non existent, so there aren't even any dump truck or water truck jobs available and if there were they sure don't pay much. So I started looking at OTR, I know I won't get rich, but at least I will have a job and the opportunity to do other things in the future. MY family is behind me and willing to make the sacrifice of MOM being gone from the home. They understand I may miss their Birthdays and some Holidays but as a family we need to do something before life kicks us to the street.
I want to thank all of the ladies that have posted in here. The more information I have the better my chances are for success.
Guys are welcome to post to any and all information is good.Be safe out there!

If you're driving solo then you have to do it. If you're teaming with your husband....well.....yeah you get to divide the job duties however the two of you decide.
I won't lie........there is something about me that causes some men to just do things for me. I don't ask them to do it but they seem to. When I drove solo (while my husband's health was in question) the mechanics would run (yes I mean RUN) out to the fuel line and fuel my truck for me. I told them no, no I can do it but they did it anyway. And frankly I let people do for me. I like to do for others and figure other people enjoy doing for me. (I'm sure that's extremely bad of me and I'll be really sorry just as soon as I figure out it's wrong LOL)
I've had other drivers come over at truckstops and help me clean my windshield, lights and mirrors. When I say, "oh I've got it" I most often get told "reminds me of doing it for my wife (girlfriend, mother).
I guess what I'm trying to say is: as women drivers we must be able to do the job on our own. BUT if our man wants to do the dirty rough part we let him. And if some nice man at a fuel line wants to wash the windshield.........why not let him? Heck, if Injun or 1nonly offered to fuel my truck and clean my windshield...I'd let them! LOL
I've offered to help other drivers whether they were female or male. You just help others because it's the right thing to do. And then if you had to help because they were idiots you get in the truck and laugh. LOL (see I AM mean)
I truly believe you're going to do great. You want this and what I learned is wanting it really bad......is 90% of getting it. Don't give up, don't quit and if you cry.....try to do it in private and not on the driving range in front of everyone like I did.DozerCowboy and Fancymcberry Thank this. -

NEW QUESTIONS:
1. What kind of work tools do I need to purchase? For my truck?
2. What if any tools does Swift provide to you?
3. Where is a good place to buy tools?
4. What about vehicle parts? Ie fuses, oil, bulbs, etc.
5. How many sets of clothing should I take to training?
6. Will I get the chance to do laundry?
7. What about a cooler a small one for some of my own drinks? Or will the take up too much room?
8. Should I take my computer or leave it at home for training?
9. Does Swift make trainer and student drive as team towards the end of the training?
10. Do they return you to your home terminal for your Solo out?
11. Once you solo out do they let you take your truck home to load your stuff in it?
12. Can you park your personal vehicle at the terminal during training? Is it secured?
13. Are you tired of my questions yet? -
Daisy Duke shorts would be "skanky" in my own lil honest opinion but you go right ahead and wear whatever you feel best expresses the real you.
