The flip side is the experienced guys need to WANT to help and teach. If you get someone who really wants to learn, be their mentor or let them find someone who will. Create an environment that helps the new guy succeed.

That's the way it was done where I worked but you came to us with some experience. We also had a tool that the schools are afraid to use. We would either not hire you or fire you. You're 100% right. A experience driver should pass on tips and technics to a prospective new driver and put his name on the line. I would be embarrass if a driver that I train was a dumb ### from the start.Wargames Thanks this.

gravdigr, You might be new in getting a CDL License, but you have lots of experience in this industry. I read one of your post, how you came in on your own time, and practiced, All the new drivers that want to succeed in trucking, should follow in your Steps. I dont know you personally at all gravdigr, But You have a Great future in trucking. I have read many new drivers quotes, and you are the only one that I have in mind of succeeding. Its that coming into the CDL yard and Practicing all day, when everyone else was in there hotel rooms waiting. You are a go getter, when everyone has hopes, you have confidence. Good Luck.

What I have found that helps me? is back EVERY day. Parking for the 'night' at 10 AM in a empty lot? Do two or three backs, dont just pull through and park it. Waiting on a load? Do some backs in the lot. Or in a empty reciving warehouse. These are what helped me.
Wargames Thanks this. -
I do the same thing. I've yet to use a pull up and I'll generally back in to a spot even if I'm running in to go to the bathroom rather than pull in front of the fuel line. You don't get better at something if you never do it.
What sucks about doing it in empty truck stops during the day is I can't hit a wide open spot for the life of me. Give me a tight spot between two trucks and I hit it everytime though. Luckily, I pull in for the night about 2-4am most nights so that's about the only option you have anyways. -
Thanks. Incidentally I passed my test yesterday and got my class A. I'm back home now waiting until I can call my DM to get my driver number and a trainer. I'm going to update my other thread but here is something I have learned, a new driver is only as good as the instruction he (or she) has been given.Wargames Thanks this.
