Okay everyone. I want to start a new thread on here that will chronicle my experience with Prime INC. i just got approved and have a date set for July 19th 2011. Yes I know its a long way away but I did that so I have time to save up a little money to make sure the Mrs and my 3 year old will have a roof over their heads and food on the table for the month that I will not be paid. So on we go.
Now, I present an bit of a different situation to this forum and I hope it helps as many people as possible. i am 6'1 and currently 330 pounds. Yes I am FAT! Not proud, its just reality. That being said I have two things to worry about that could get me sent home jobless before orientation is even over. First, I know i am going to fail the BMI test that the physician giving the physicals requires. Therefore I will be required to take a sleep study to make sure I do not have sleep apnea. No big deal as I am sure this is something i would know by now or at least have some symptoms. I don't know many 23 year olds with sleep apnea. Second, my blood pressure could, and may, get me sent home faster than the sleep apnea. With the sleep apnea, it wont disqualify you from driving, just makes you wear a CPAP machine. The blood pressure is DOT standards and if I am over 140/??? I wont even be able to get my permit.
Anyway, those are the two things I am really worried about, the latter more so.
SO, I may take a while to update, as I have a month and a half before I leave for SPRIMO but I hope you will join me on my journey, short as it may be, and I hope to meet some of you down the road.
P.S. I am a total NOOB! Never driven a truck before and never shifted a gear so this one ought to be really interesting!

Hi Matty,
I just got off the phone with the recruiter for Prime and sent them my DD214 from the military. I had a couple months of unemployment in late 2010 and I'm currently unemployed as well. Any problems that you have heard with small employment gaps and securing a job with them?
I'm 5' 8" and about 200 lbs. I just took my blood pressure and it's 126/85... so, I'm kinda in the same boat as you are. You have, however, gotten yourself a start date and I'm still working on that.
I'll follow your thread, how was your experience with them so far? Can I expect to start in late July if I get approved?
Any information you have will greatly assist me in getting started. You can pm me as well.
Thanks!! -
Thanks a bunch!

Well thanks for following my thread! No, I have not heard any problems with the job gaps. How many months total have you been unemployed in the last, oh I guess, 5 years? I believe they will ask for some job references or something. I actually just read something about just that, ill have to see if I can find it again and Ill get back with you about it.
Your weight isnt terrible, as mine makes me morbidly obese by medical standards. I look like a big dude but I am not a sloppy big dude, if you know what I mean so its hard for me to think of myself as morbidly obese. Your BP is also not bad at all, in fact its right on par with DOT standards as far as I know.

My experience is limited to only the recruitment phase but I am super satisfied with that part. She has kept her word on everything thus far. But thats really about all I can say about them as of now. If you were to get approved pretty soon I think you could get July if you wanted. Actually she made a mistake on mine and scheduled me for the 21st of this month, which is two weeks to the day away so I would guess you could get in pretty quick. You should definitely try, I would like to have someone I kinda sorta know to look forward to being there with lol.
Anyway Ill go for now, hope I have helped at least a little. Feel free to ask me any more questions and I will do my best to answer them. -
You should probably go get your BP checked by a doctor before you go. Y'all don't want to get there, and be shipped right home because you fail the medical. I'd say it would be better to get on a BP medicine tomorrow and be limited to a 1-year medical card, than to let it go.
This is from the company website...
http://primeinc.com/drivers/medical-qualifications.html
Some basic requirements are:
- Blood Pressure Levels: Less than 140 over 90

- Hearing: Must be able to hear a forced whisper at 6 feet
- Diabetic: Sugar levels must be well controlled without insulin required
- Heart Related Issues: Must have special documents and may need recent specific tests
(These qualifications are as of 03/09/2010 and may be changed by Prime Inc. without prior notification)Nerdybiker Thanks this. -
Thanks for all the good info so far. Will talk to Joan at Prime probably tomorrow.
I guess this is a stupid question, but concerning the training phase of any trucking company...
I hear a lot of people talking about bus tickets. I guess If I drive to Prime's HQ, there will really be no way to drive my personal vehicle back home afterwards because I'll be on the road for the next four to six months in a rig with a trainer.
How do you get around while you're there at HQ and how do you get home for the little home time you get while in training? -
There's a shuttle bus that Prime runs around the area near the terminal, and you've got feet, right?
Home time... you'd have to arrange that with your instructor or trainer and your FM (Fleet Manager.) -
What is this crap " Hearing: Must be able to hear a forced whisper at 6 feet. "?

That's #### good advice, go get your BP checked as soon as possible. If you need to go on medication, it can take a while to figure out what works best for you. It took 3 months and 5 different medications for my Doc and I to figure out the meds that work for me. Good luck!
