    I found it. More BS.

    WHISPER TEST*
    Instructions
    • The examiner stands at arm's length (~0.6 m) behind the patient (to prevent lip reading)
    • The opposite auditory canal is occluded by the patient or examiner and the tragus is rubbed in a circular motion (goal; to block hearing from that ear)
    • The examiner exhales and whispers a combination of numbers and letters (example 4-K-2). Whispering at the end of exhalation is to ensure as quiet and as standardized voice as possible.
    • If the patient responds correctly, hearing is considered normal and no further screening is necessary on that ear.
    • If the patient responds incorrectly, then repeat using a different number-letter combination.
    • If on repeated testing, the patient can answer three out of a possible six numbers-letters correctly, the patient passes. If they cannot answer three out of six or more, the patient fails in that ear.
    • Repeat the sequence in the opposite ear using different combinations of numbers and letters. (Note: patients with memory problems may need a simplified letter/number combination to compensate for their inability to remember)

      *Pirozzo S. Whispered voice test for screening for hearing impairment in adults and children: systematic review. BMJ. 2003 October 25;
      327(7421):967.

    From the FMCSA/DOT regulations themselves"

    http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/administration/fmcsr/fmcsrruletext.aspx?reg=391.43

    "Subpart E - Physical qualifications and examinations

    391.43Medical examination; certificate of physical examination

    -Ears. Note evidence of any ear disease, symptoms of aural vertigo, or Meniere's Syndrome. When recording hearing, record distance from patient at which a forced whispered voice can first be heard. For the whispered voice test, the individual should be stationed at least 5 feet from the examiner with the ear being tested turned toward the examiner. The other ear is covered. Using the breath which remains after a normal expiration, the examiner whispers words or random numbers such as 66, 18, 23, etc. The examiner should not use only sibilants (s-sounding test materials). The opposite ear should be tested in the same manner. If the individual fails the whispered voice test, the audiometric test should be administered. For the audiometric test, record decibel loss at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz, and 2,000 Hz. Average the decibel loss at 500 Hz, 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz and record as described on the form. If the individual fails the audiometric test and the whispered voice test has not been administered, the whispered voice test should be performed to determine if the standard applicable to that test can be met."

    Getting pretty nervous about going to SRIMO in a month. I think the hardest part is going to be leaving home for at least two straight months. I have a family here and I know I can look forward to being homesick. But I think my family knows and understand I have to do what I have to do to make a decent living. Two months not seeing my three year old will be hell. Ill miss him being a pain in the ### all the time and Ill miss his mother yelling at him, though I cant stand it now. Things are going to have to change but I keep telling myself I will only drive otr like this for a couple years and then come do something more local or at least where I am home every weekend. You gotta start somewhere. I keep talking myself out of it but I know its something I have wanted to do since I was young so I may as well start while I still am. Better now than when I am 40.
    Anyway, I am open to any advice from anyone with families back at home. I know with technology you can stay pretty close with things like Skype and whatnot but I just want to know how to cope. I know I sound like a sap but I am just a worried dad lol.

    I have to call my recruiter tomorrow when she comes back to work to get a date. I'm hoping for the 12th but I will see what she says. If she can't get me in then, I will see about the 19th.
