I currently have my hazmat endorsement and want to keep it, but do not want to do hazmat lds at this time. My co. offers hazmat pay for those of us who have it and non hazmat pay for those that dont. The problem i'm having is i want to go to non hazmat pay and co. said i'll continue to receive hazmat pay untill i drop it off my license and refusal to haul any hazmat will result in write ups and too many write ups for refusal to haul hazmat can end in termination.Like i say i want to keep my hazmat endorsemnt and just switch to non hazmat pay.Can a co. get away with this by forcing me to accept hazmat pay? By the way it's not that much difference in pay, but a lot less miles and wasted time in doing them. Any advise would be welcomed or anyone i could contact that would be of help on this. Not just ready to terminate my employmet yet, need the insurance.

You want the bennies (insurance) but you don't want to accept the employers stipulations for your employment - run hazmat loads if you have the endorsement. I don't think there is anything you can do except find another employer, or let your hazmat endorsement expire.

I believe that the company can enact any policy they wish to enact. I can think of no regulation in trucking or labor that would exercise any control over this issue. You might try talking very nicely to someone who would listen and get it changed that way.

I don't know what the issues within your company are regarding Hazmat loads so I don't understand your thoughts. I see this come up all the time in other situations and for the life of do not understand an issue with Hazmat loads. To me loads are loads. I have always done better and climbed higher by having better qualifications and doing what others weren't willing to do. I have always reaped great rewards doing this. It has worked in other professions as well as trucking. Surely all their loads aren't Hazmat. What will they do for you if you pull Hazmat for them?

I may be way off base on this, just looking for a way to make the best of what you see as a bad situation.

As much as I see this come up I think Hazmat loads must have changed while I have been out. I need to learn about this. Please tell me why drivers don't want to haul Hazmat.

    Two fold for me.

One the PIA factor of having to make sure everything was on the bills right, stopping more to check placards(load checks went away but some companies require them still) and all the dang stopping for rail road track on State Highways I tend to run. You would not believe how many people do not connect the big orange diamond with the RR Xing sign and get pissed when you throw on the hazards and stop. It will give you grey hair.

Two I will only pay for one background check period.

I had to have one for haz-mat.
One to work with my daughter band at school.
One to volunteer at the VA.
    One for my CWP.

I picked the one most important and haz-mat lost. It is not the money, or that they will find something. It is the principal that all those checks are done by the exact same #### office to the tune of$ 150 apiece!

Giving up your hazmat endorsement may affect your earning potential. Not only the immediate reduction in your cpm but in possible lost loads which may require you to sit until your employer finds a non hazmat load for you.

The key to being profitable is providing value to your employer. That $150.00 bucks you are complaining about is chicken feed compared to the money you can earn by hauling 1 extra hazmat load per week.

I have had my hazmat endorsement since I began trucking back in 1991. I cannot count all the times I have been rerouted to drop my load at a terminal and pick up a better load that happened to be hazmat because the other drivers in the area couldnt pull it. More money for me and they got to sit with my leftovers.

    Live and learn.

I agree... dropping a hazmat endorsement because the premium for pulling those loads is looked at as "chicken feed" is rather short-sighted. Its real value is opening up more loads - especially when freight is down in a given area. Pulling a hazmat load out of a freight-poor region is preferable to deadheading or sitting idle.
