    Congrats on your first trip!
Welcome to the World of Truck Driving.
Be carefull in Chicago (and other places) where even when marked a clearance sign does not take road resurfacing or snowpack into account. This can take away the few inches you thought you had. With 6" of snow a 14' clearance suddenly becomes a problem.
Carry a 100' air line with you. Should you ever find yourself (Gently) stuck, deflate your tires a few pounds to lower the truck, back out, air the tires back up and roll on. This is what a wrecker service will do and charge you a few hundred bucks for it.

Watch out for the clearances in NY. For some odd reason, they post everything at least a foot (or so they say) lower then what it is. I've cleared a 12'2 bridge in Brooklyn but wasn't going to make a 12'6 one down the road. Go figure.

Be aware of what your driving / pulling. Nothing like sending an EX flatbedder ( flattop , short stacks, flatbed ) to Chicago ( Condo Cab , High stacks with a HI cube dryvan ). His longtime SHGORTCUTS just did not work out.:biggrin_2558:

Flatbed, It's hard enough trying to notice the low clearance signs, If you drove flatbed and now have to get used to looking for a different height it must be tough. Old habits are hard to break. 13' 6" is stuck in my head currently. I think TheStreetDream is right, Some bridges I've seen sure look like a different height than what is posted.

And Gears, Nice looking truck!!, I'll get some pictures of mine this week. It's an old worn out Freightliner Columbia. But I like it, fits like an old shoe.

" If you drove " :biggrin_25519: Was not ME , was a driver my son had hired last year , he would not listen to directions , he was a 1 year OTR expert in his own mind.

Sorry about that. I re-read it and saw where you said "his" longtime shortcuts just did not work out.

Speaking of low bridges, I got a good scare today on the Pennsy turnpike. I'm driving along and there are other trucks on the road around me. I happen to glance up at the clearance sign and it reads 13' 1" (I'm 13' 6"). I'm doing 64mph (what we're governed at). I lay on the brakes and get it to about 40mph just as I come to the bridge. :biggrin_2551: My mind is racing, It's amazing all the things you can think of in a few seconds. First I think to myself, I'm on the turnpike!!! Is HAS to have high enough bridges for van trailers!! Then I second guess myself and wonder If the road split to a different route while I wasn't paying attention. Then I think, "How are all the other trucks making it under"!!! My adrenalin was about maxed out. Next thing I knew I just went right under the bridge without a problem. I'm thinking "What the heck was that sign about"!?!?!?!? Then I see the next bridge and THAT sign reads 12' 6" on SHOULDER. I think it took about 10 more miles to get my heart to stop beating out of my chest.
