I used to haul rubber roofing out of Greenville, IL. I would get it because most of the guys on the St. Louis board didn't have hazmat endorsements. The hazmat part was a few gallons of adhesive... and it paid a whopping $50.00 extra.

Normally I wouldn't have cared but that little red sign on your trailer can cause you to get an inspection when you wouldn't even get a second look from the DOT without it.

I believe you may have made an "extra" $50.00 for the hazmat designation but don't forget you also got the miles on that load which kept you moving rather than sitting waiting on a non hazmat load.

While having a placarded hazmat load "may" get more scrutiny from DOT at weigh stations I have really seen no increase in the number of inspections I have received over the years. Some years I never get checked at all while others I may get random paperwork checks. Never had an issue with paperwork being incorrect regarding a hazmat load.

Of course alot has to do with the company name on the side of the truck as well as the overall appearance of the truck and the driver.

The extra $$$ I made would barely cover the expense of the intrusive federal background check... I just got annoyed that I had to pay for my background check when a terrorist wouldn't even need one... at least the feds could have said that if you plan on blowing up a building that you must have a hazmat endorsement... it might have worked!

Since I dropped my hazmat I have not had to turn down any loads since the last two carriers I have leased to don't haul hazmat.

I would drop the hazmat if your getting the pay that meets what you want or go find a different carrier. I have mine but as an O/O to much red tape and for what the freight is going for, i don't use/haul it.

True enough, carriers want it so they can sell to anybody. And all the points are valid here..........

    You do get more freight
You are picked on more with the diamond

And no IMO, strictly from a money perspective, it's not worth it. Haz loads do not pay the driver anymore wages......EG: Pumpkin wants drivers and so does J.B. Pumpkin wants you to haul chemicals for .32 cpm, use hoses, chemical suits........ J.B. wants you to line haul Budweiser up to Dallas on a drop hook for the .32cpm.

If .32 is the number....what would you do?? If you can't give me a raise then lower my responsibilities ! Easy, done.

I really don't understand the prob running hazmat ..

But I'm a tanker I do it everyday ... If you fear of hazmat has to do with knowledge of hazmat etc that can be fixed ...

But if you get the haz pay for the endorsement on your lic I'm not sure if they can force hazmat on you but a hazmat load for a common carrier is normally wide spread anyhow I personally wouldn't worry about it

I have had my Hazmat for 20+ years. It has served me well and provided many opportunities for better jobs and better pay. I paid for an FBI background check 5 years ago. The FBI is better than this. The underwear bomber and shoe bomber are just a couple of examples just how good they are at what they do. This policy must feel like a slap in the face to them. I will trust them before I trust any of the empty suits in DC that are supposed to be representing us but instead rob us blind. These guys are the real patriots, the people who I put my trust in. To everyone at the FBI, keep up the good work and God bless all of you. It seems to me that this is just a waste of our money and I will no longer participate.
