QUOTE:::e logs= paycut. you can defend it.and make it sound good.but watch your pay check drop.it will.it was just enough for me to leave the long haul living behind.this past january.i have bills to pay.the gov/corp regs are running trucking down for the everyday citizen driver.the fat cats want the long haul driver to work for peanuts.even though you guys are away from home most of the time.e logs is just one more way to lower a truckers income. in the name of safety.of course

If you are logging legally on paper then E'logs has no effect on your pay. If you are JohnnyFastTrucker working 2-3 paper log books at one time then E-logs will obviously put a crimp in your illegal activities.

Don't worry about the atlas, Stevens will give you one for trucks.

Now, after a couple weeks with ELogs, I can tell you, I don't like them. At least not the ones Stevens uses. Clunky, slow, stupid, poorly designed physically as well as the software.
It slides everywhere at the slightest motion, it takes forever to start up, it tends to crash and to lock up, menus can take FOREVER to open and then are poorly designed and too small. Changing from logs to messages is incredibly slow, and did I mention it's slow?
And the reply macro does not pick up info from the message you are replying to, so you have to write it down or go back and forth which takes forever.
    Junk.
I spend far longer doing the ELog than I did even when being meticulous with the paper logs and doing QC messages combined.
What little time it 'saves' is lost, and then some.

Thank you all again for the replies. Smokr, I have read the packing list thread, I was just inquiring as to whether it was accurate when it comes to Stevens training,

i agree with smokr.and i know stevens is strick.i'm not knocking what you guys go through. i started at stevens .fulfilled my contract and moved on to a better paying company....now with e logs, the company i moved to, made it impossible to bob tail on my break,to walmart, to buy groceries, without it being recorded. in effect, wrecking my log time.before e log,i did not have to record it.just 1 example

Um, okay. Apparently you've had a bad experience. I drove for Stevens back in '08 and were it not for some personal issues that I had to deal with I would still be driving for them. :biggrin_255:

I don't mean to say that they are perfect ... no company is, but being a scare monger and talking out your ##### is no way to communicate. If you have disparaging things to say perhaps you should consider starting a thread on the negative side of things. :biggrin_2557:

If you lost all these things, then perhaps trucking was the wrong answer for you. For that I feel for you, but you really do get out of trucking exactly what you put into it. It is an extremely difficult lifestyle. NONE of what you said is "fact.":biggrin_25523:

no no rattlebunny.i'm fine. when i started with stevens, i was single.it worked out. i still earn my living from my cdl. don't lie. you saw what i saw. good people ,with bills that needed to be paid, getting screwed by the promise of a stevens truck driving job. stevens wants that gov subsidy for every student that shows up. the recruiter promising $45,000 to people that really need $45k at a minimum is evil.there is no way a first year driver at stevens will earn $45,000.fact

For the most part you're right about the 45k. It's tough to make that work your first year with all the growing pains involved.

I try to never lie, and I can't say that I didn't see drivers with those issues. My own personal issue involved a foreclosure, but wasn't related to what I got paid at Stevens.

Most of the drivers that I met, in the situation you're describing, were the ones that spent most of their time waiting around truck stops, and the yard. Most of that time they spent ######## about how few miles they were getting. I tend to be proactive. When sitting on the yard in Dallas, ask if you can deliver tractors, shag local runs, take dropped loads and deliver them. I also would regularly be asked to "find" an empty at Kraft after delivering to the Rail Yard. In those situations ... when there were no empties ... I would call in to the planners and ask if there was a loaded trailer at Kraft that would be in a better position if I got it to the yard.

There are numerous things that you can do to maximize your miles ... you I am sure know most of this. But the last thing that you can do to prevent running into the situation where you're working on bankruptcy, is sit in a truck stop or the drivers lounge and complain.

Ask for extra work ... keep the wheels turning. Your DM will be impressed and your rep (most important thing you have at Stevens) will be much improved. Sit an complain and ... well ... you get what you ask for.

As far as having a family, girlfriend, etc ... and that causing your demise in trucking ... it is what you make of it. If you're family can't handle the time you're gone ... you're going to have problems. I have found that most people that REALLY love you will find a way to make things work.

There are several things that the recruiters tell you that are dead wrong. Home every two weeks ... wrong. Plan on being out over a month if you want to make any money (longer if you're leasing). Planners will NEVER pressure you to drive illegally ... partially wrong ... planners seldom check on your HOS. You HAVE TO BE on top of that yourself and don't be afraid to explain the saying in my sig.

"Failure to plan on your behalf does not constitute an emergency on mine."

    Keep the greasy side down.

Yup, it is. Training is the same at about all the companies as far as what to take. The difference is what you're taught, and how it's taught. That list will serve well for training with Stevens, except take as many clothes as you can, inside as many bags as you can sleep in a cot with, because that's what you'll be doing for at least two months. Most other places it's a couple of weeks out with a trainer, or a month. Count on two, then another month or two before you get home with a truck.
