Yes. (I apparently need a ten letter reply).

Not 100% sure, but pretty close to 100% sure you can. If you purchase from a dealer in one State and you're making payments for a couple years, as I understand it the title stays with the dealer or the finance company until the rig is paid off. In the meantime, you're plated in another State, most likely in the State where you reside.
Clear as mud?
-
In finance the title stays with the lien holder, but is titled in your name and home state.
An example that comes to mind is a l/o that owns a truck and might get plates from an out of state carrier. Another "yes." -
I know western dist. out of Denver has their trucks plated in Wy,.. The Colorado state dept or REVENUE did or wanted to file to get western to buy co plates. I don't know how it ever turned out, western was legal to plate in Wy since they had an office/place of business there.
For the single O/O wanting to plate in a cheap state that he doesnt live in, Id be carefull. I know alot of guys used Oklahomo for a base plate, but I doubt its fully legit.
Gears, you bring up a good point about the financie company holding the title, I know Illinoiz does it that way. In wis, the law says the owner posseses the title, but it states on the title who the lienholder is, If any.
I think josh is Right technicaly, but If that vehicle is titled in wis, the owner lives in wis, but tries to plate it in Ok then I think he'd be asking for problems.
Before I tried something like this, Id call my home state, and the cheap state, for legalities.Gears and bullhaulerswife Thank this. -
In this case, you're correct Red. I was coming from the angle of an OO getting his own plate, himself, in a cheap state where he has no office, nor resides in.
-
Mine is titled in Iowa, but base plated in Nebraska. Since the carrier I work with is out of Nebraska, I could legally get plates from Nebraska. My plates, not the carriers.
-
Mine is titled in Wis, and I could go lease on to jb hunt ( hahahahhaa) and thus have an arkansaw plate, total legit.
But I think we need more info from the OP. -
Why not? The Title and Baseplate are unrelated. Your License plate is the receipt showing you've paid for the privilege of using a public roadway.

Yes you can. I know someone who lives in Cali and has his truck registered in Utah and has Cali Apportioned plates. he does this so that he can bypass Cali's BIT program.
