In this situation it could lead to an admission of fault which would feed fire for a lawsuit.

What have we become as a society when a simple apology has to be avoided in fear of a lawsuit. :biggrin_25521: What a shame.

That right there. Current LEO training methods are getting MORE cops--and citizens--hurt. :biggrin_25513:

This is truly disturbing, thank you for sharing this with us. It couldn't have been easy. I think several people were on the money about filing a complaint. I'm sure you have a lawsuit, personally I wouldn't go that route but that's just the way I am. Fact of the matter is nobody should ever be treated this way, not even the guilty. If you haven't already contacted this officers superiors please do so.

Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office won't talk to me. I left messages with my phone number. I can't get past voicemail.

Wow this thread blew up. I read every post. I am pretty anti-establishment and have a pretty hard time dealing with anyone who thinks they are above reproach.

I am also big on ones right to defend oneself. In this case your best defense would have been to stay in the truck. That has been established and I think most of us here will remember that lesson well, Injun most of all. Let me give a slightly different scenerio dealing with self preservation without leo involvement.

There is a case years ago I read about, I do not have the docket numbers but I'm sure with a little searching they can be found. It was reported about in the NRA magazine. The incident took place in DC which many people know has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. We all know that when guns are outlawed then only criminals have them. That is not cliche, that is cold hard fact.

So the incident happened like this. Woman calls 911 in the middle of the night. Someone is breaking into her house. During the call she is cut off. 911 dispatch tries to call back and the line is busy (cut phone line will give a busy signal, in this case the phone wire was ripped out of the wall by the assailant). Procedure at this point would be to send a squad car. An hour and a half later (give or take, the details are a little fuzzy but it was a long time) the squad car arrives to find the woman on her bed shot multiple times and bleeding to death. She survives.

The womans statement says that the assailant came into her bedroom while she was on the line with 911 and ripped the phone line out of the wall. She was then beaten and raped for 40 mins (according to her bedside clock) then shot and left for dead.

After she recovers she files a lawsuit against the police department. After all their job is to PROTECT and serve. The judge stated that it is not the police departments job to provide personal protection to the citizens, it is that citizens responsibility to protect themself or remove themself from the threatening situation.

So keep in mind should a crackhead or rapist want in your truck bad enough, just calling 911 is not enough, because it is not a leo's job to protect you, it is their job to enforce the law and arrest those that violate the law. So they will be more than happy to arrest that rapist breaking into your truck, but they are not necessarily compelled to do it in a timely fashion.

Protecting yourself is YOUR responsibility. Always remember that. Police are only required to intervene in a timely fashion if they can see the crime happening in front of them. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Another fun fact if you drive for a large carrier like I do. All their trucks are keyed alike. At any one time there can be 2,500+ people walking around with a key to my truck. Also consider what your co does with the trucks it retires. Now you have anyone that purchased a retired truck from your company possibly having a key to your truck.

Keep all this in mind and please protect yourself accordingly. It is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Indeed. The simple solution to personal protection is a ratchet strap between the doors. But what about when you are not in your truck? We all go in the truckstop to use the restroom, shower, do laundry, eat, whatever. How secure are your belongings? All it takes is one disgruntled employee, or careless employee that lost their key/had it stolen, and now your posessions in your truck are now vulnerable.

I'm not overly concerned about my dirty clothes or paperwork and whatnot, a real theif wants valuables. My netbook was $1,400, my phone, other odds and ends. This is where a kensington lock for the computer, and a small safe and cable lock can come in very handy to protect your posessions. If you are really worried about the truck a brake and steering lock may look good. Depends on just how paranoid you want to be.
