Don't you have to get into the left 2 lanes to take the low road? Kinda habitually ingrained to not be over there. Thus not likely to go low.
However, it's been awhile, so I could be forgetting. -
I always go down. Don't know why other than that's the way my trainer went. Man, traffic in Austin always sucks! There are only three lanes north bound until the split and I always stay in the center lane just to avoid people getting on and off.

Up, Down, Up, Down.....
-
I choose depending on the time of day and volume of traffic. High traffic, which is practically always, but NOT a peak commuting hour when lots of folks will be getting on or off, I take the low road and it is sometimes quicker, which is the opposite of what you would think.

What I remember from 2005 was that it didn't make any difference, I took the low road, the guy a few ahead of me took the high and I came out of the split ahead of that one.
It still took 3 hours of stop and go to go those few miles.. There wasn't a decent bypass. -
It depends if I am Northbound or Southbound, if I am going home or not and how much traffic there is. I live in Austin, off US 290 E.
During periods of low traffic, it is almost always faster to stay on the lower deck. Leaving from home Southbound I can't always get over to the lower deck and I have to stay on the upper deck. It is slower as one lane ends. If I am going home and am Northbound, I stay on the upper deck. It is less difficuly getting into the proper lane to exit on 290.
Austin traffic sucks big time! -
Hi or Lo, the above post pretty much says it all. . .
-
I go up top going southbound, low going northbound. If traffic is bad, I just go with the flow.

Listen to AM radio for traffic reports as well as the CB. It can save you, not every time but now and then. I always perferred the top.
