Well crap. When I last reported in I had been hired back at my local job. Got there and things were all butterflies and kisses to start. My dealers were happy to have me back (several had asked for me by name). Well I just got laid off last Monday (but they asked me to stay the rest of the week to train my replacement).

I could pick up the phone and be in orientation in a week if I wanted to sleep in a truck (I don't).

Maybe it's just burnout (I was doing 75-80 hours a week for the last 2 months getting the old/new business rolling again) but right now a 40 hour a week "normal" job sounds kinds nice. Anyone have any good advice on how to find a life after trucking?

Have an app in at Con-Way, we have Fed Ex Freight and Ground barn in town, but Freight doesn't have an opening right now and I'm not buying a truck anytime soon. Central Transport is hiring agan (LOL). ABF and YRC aren;t hiring right now.

if i were to be laid off, that would tell me work is so slow, they WILL NOT BE HIRING anyone else.. (they would re-call you when things pick up again)....you are fired essentially, and this being the case, i'd tell them to "pound sand" to train YOUR REPLACEMENT...
i see no rhyme or reason to "lay off" someone, only to replace him...?? you got whacked, and they are what else, lying to you....put in a claim for unemployment, but at the same time, file a COMPLAINT for this with the labor board, let the company explain how one can be laid off but they are hiring a replacement..????

it IS burnout....i wouldn't do OTR either, and then too you NEED to remember, you gotta find parking for that truck/trailer as well. maybe you have all sorts of room or places to park at, but why go through that all over again..??

i too have tried each and every one of those companies, and you are right, they just ain't hiring (in many areas). do not forget FedEx merged with it's other company, so the need for drivers just isn't there.

you could try applying to UPS Freight however. they ARE (or were) taking applications (in many areas). i got 3 different apps for different jobs at the one near me.

    Jarhed1964 Thanks this.

They moved the domicile for the route 100 miles away. Did that to 3 drivers, none were given notice or an opportunity to relocate. The new guy who rode along with me one day to train to be a fill in driver was actually training to take over my route. He's a little dense or else I'd have been out of a job with no notice. So I spent a week being an over priced GPS and answering the same *#&^ questions every day.

The best part is they called last night wanting to know what he did with the truck after he dropped me off. How the *&^% do I know?

well THAT SUCKS...not giving you guys a chance to even see if you'd drive the miles to get to work, seems they really didn't care about you guys after all...now it makes sense that they "laid you off"...

as for the ?new guy", as you said, what do you know what he did to or with the truck after he dropped you off, it ain't YOUR RESPONSIBILITY NO MORE.

try the typical Craig's List job search, Monster, i have been to a website called: logisticsJobsite: and this one : Engineer-Jobs : and your local unemployment office for job postings. as you said, you may not want to even drive no more (hang up the keys), so if you can do something else like run machinery then go for it...regular hours, pay, benefits, etc, etc.

Beware craigslist! There's a guy on here says he got shafted out of three weeks pay by an O/O on there. I hate it for you bro. Good luck.

I wouldn't use a Craig's List printout to wipe my butt. It's a cesspool like Yahoo. Anyone hanging out in either place has not done their research or they want to hang out with thieves, pedophiles and misfits.

Sorry if this angers some, it was meant with all due respect but it is very factual.
