Well after 4+ years with PAM, I have finally moved on. All I can say is it was ok until they rolled all the small companies(Decker, AFS, Mcneill) into the parent company. I hung on for quite awhile after that but only for 2 reasons. I got a good dedicated run for awhile. And secondly, I spent alot of time doing research and talking to other drivers before choosing another company. I am not going to throw stones, but I will list some changes and other things that made me decide to leave PAM. If it helps some new drivers fine. If you think I'm just whining, that's ok too!
    1. I was a Decker trainer, and when they closed Decker I was told trainers with PAM were not allowed home every 2 weeks, but must stay out for duration of training (pickup+training+dropoff at orientation+find load home+alot of weeks.) Now some other trainers have told me that's not necessarily true. However that is what Jeff Adair told me, and at the time he was in charge of trainers.
    2. Since Daniel Cushman took over there has been a big push for drivers to team up. After I started running solo again after being a trainer, I decided I like solo. Personally, considering some of his backround I think he will continue to push to make PAM more of a team company.
    3. Was recently told layover pay will now be at the discretion of your Driver Manager. (Might want to change the rules laid out in the Driver Handbook)
    4. This is the biggie as far as I am concerned. RESPECT!!! 3 months ago I had a DM named Will who during a conversation about a bad load assignment with a bad pickup # told me on the phone "I never want to hear what a driver has to say"and hung up on me. More recently I had an issue that didnt allow me to be able to roll on Monday morning after hometime for the first time in 4 years. I reported it Sunday and was told to call my DM Monday. When I called Monday and explained the situation I was told "Don't call back until you can roll" and again I was hung up on.

I now work for Eagle Express Lines out of Indy. Although it has been a short time I am impressed with the abundance of communcation, and respect. I feel like everyone is working together.

All in all I am just happy to move into a different phase of my career, one that I hope is more what this industry is about than the last 4 years.
    Peace and be blessed

Is the Decker facility still in NJ or was it closed down?

Good on you for not putting up with that nonsense....There are good jobs to be had and reputable and respectful companies to work for. This is only my personal opinion so take it for what it is worth, I feel if more like you took a stand to the subject of "morale and welfare...and yes respect", it would in turn and hopefully change some attitudes with some of the companies that treat their employees as such as this. A good Company will understand when situations arise that needs immediate attention. Especially after 4yrs of dedicated service. Good luck to you and thanks sharing your experience!

Exactly! It amazes me the amount of #### drivers put up with. That's why the industry is so screwed up. Have some self respect and demand respect from others.

I am going to Swift next week. I know I am going to be lied to, cheated, and treated like crap but have to go some where to put in my time and pay the bills. These big companies dont care about the drivers because when 1 leaves there are 6 more waiting to take his place. Cheaper.

Do your time, and then run. However, I will say this, do your research and talk to driver's of perspective companies. Take your time and make a forward move not a sideways one. Good Luck to you.

I worked for PAM for a year. I started with AFS and you could actually sit down and talk to your dispatcher and then PAM took over and that was gone. My biggest problem was road rescue, very rude and would hang up on you. You are correct no respect for drivers. I work for a company now that if you have an issue you call them and they deal with it and say thank you for calling.

I am a current student at Millis Transfer Inc. in Cartersville Ga right now and enjoying it greatly. Even though I am a rookie in this profession as a career move, due to recently retiring from the Marines, I am quickliy learning alot, but also agree I have a tremendous amount to still learn! No I am not a no it all by no stretch, but learned a few things from my old man who's been doing this for over 50 yrs now. Miss rinding in those International Transtars during the summers in the early 70's! It is unfortunate both ways as I hear truckers turning down loads or making excuses for not making mission and also particular Companies failing to properly support the driver who is many miles from home out there in no mans land. I feel if you "volunteer" to work for a trucking company then you should be there for two purposes: (1) Make them money by giving them 100% without complaint...NO LESS...(2) Make a decent living while be unconditionally "RESPECTED" and "SUPPORTED! The personnel working in the Training Dept, Safety Dept, Maintenance Dept, Administration Dept, or Management of a trucking Company "HAVE TO SUPPORT THE TRUCKER....PROFESSIONALLY" as it is a complete team effort that leads to the success or demise of the entire team. Those that elect to have a terrrible and unprofessional attitude should be pulled from the shadows and identified for recourse action and held accountable for those intolerable actions. I have no idea what my future holds in this profession, as I simply hope to get an Honest days pay for an Honest days work! That all I ask for, however, no of us should be discreminated against ot treated unfairly. I look forward to working with you all....God Bless and stay safe out there!

Welcome to trucking Leatherneck91. It is not an easy living but neither is being a Marine. Thanks for your service. A lot of this job is what you make of it,having worked for PAM and seeing the way they operate just makes you aware of what to look for in other companies. Good luck,I hear Millis is a very good company.
