so the other day my truck was out of commission for reefer problems. so i got to take out a 2011 freightliner... with autoshift. have any of you guys driven a auto shift truck? its got this paddle flap looking thing, you can drive it as a manual, sort of. theres no clutch, if you select manual you flip the paddle up or down to shift. if you select automatic it doesnt even have a shifter, you push in a button and move this thing down into gear... using your finger.

i hated this truck so much, when i was on a hill it would roll back unless you were on the brake, so you had to use the brake like a clutch almost to stop the truck from goin backwards. it shifted just like a manual even in auto shift. it'd rev up the gear, pause for the clutch, then shift. it was so strange.

so i get to my first stop of the day park the truck, its 90+ degrees out so i leave it running to keep the a/c on. i come back out and the truck was off. i opened up the owners manual and find out it has a "clean idle" certification or whatever. do these people realize that starting a truck 15 or 20 times a day is absolutely horrible for it? this thing wouldnt stay on passed i think 5 minutes! plus the cab was hotter then a oven on thanksgiving day, i thought it was hot outside, once i got into that cab it was even worse cuz all that engine heat and the a/c wouldnt blow when the truck was off.

so thats how i feel about autoshift and clean idle crap.

Not sure what the idle has to do with clean idle. Mine has the little sticker but will idle as much or little as I want it. Probably a setting on the ECM more than anything.

Autoshift with the centrifugal clutch will not hold you on a hill, neither would a manual withought slipping and wearing a clutch. A clutch should be in or out. But they are not for everybody personally I love mine when easing through construction or accidents. They do operate as a manual if you want. They make (I think haven't seen a new one in a while) an autoshift with a normal clutch. You use the clutch starting out and in reverse.

Backing in a autoshift without a clutch will teach you throttle control or seperate your spine hich ever comes first:biggrin_2554:

I think if you set the cruise a 100 or 200 above idle, it will cancel out the idle timer. The trucks i had used in cdl school did that, 10 min n they shut down

I have a 2012 Freightliner and that is one way I override and keep the truck idling. I have a standard so I can also push the clutch in and do it (but you have to watch for the check engine light to come on which happens just before the truck shuts down.

Those things can give a whole new meaning to the term, "Hit a dock"!!
They're not very nice to kingpins either. I had two of them for a total of eight months, hopefully, auto shifter never again!!:biggrin_25513:

We got some new Frieghtliners at work. We have a bunch of 10sped auto shift '06 KW's with the clutch. The Freightliners have disc brakes. You stop and you have to rev it to get the brakes to release. No rolling.

    Those discs work good.

it does the same thing YOU should be doing when stop. use the brake NOT the clutch to keep it from moving on a hill..!
thats because it an AUTOSHIFT, it's still a 10sp just has a computer and an X Y shifter to do the work. why is it that everyone thinks an autoshift in a truck will shift the same as an auto in a car..? it's NOT an auto like your car has

clean idle has nothing to do with the truck turning off.... clean idle "sticker on drivers side" is so you can idle in CA. the stick does say
    'CA clean idle"
OP idle was ordered turned on by YOUR company and can be set for what ever time YOUR company wants the truck to idle 3-30min, so if you don't like it go talk to your company about it THEY are the ones that had it turned on and set for how long. almost all trucks built after 2004 have it, on some of the new trucks (new ecm software) the OP idle uses the outside air temp so the truck will idle if the outside temp is below X (for heat) or above X (for a/c) my 2006 has the OP idle turned off.

Well of course if you let off on the brake you're going to roll down hill. That's why if you're on a hill you put the left foot on the brake and the right foot slowly pushes down on the accelerator until you're moving forward, then you let off on the brake.
You still need to use both feet when driving an automatic.

well for taking off, with a normal truck, on a hill. i got my clutch in, my brake down. i let my clutch out and just about simultaneously let my brake off so i dont ride the clutch. this autoshift truck soon as i took my foot off the brake it would roll backwards. i tested it out in a parking lot and everything. it just rolls, thats it. i had to gas it a little bit before i let go of the brake. i'm all set with this thing i didnt like it at all.

so its safe for CA's ridiculous laws. i thought it was a federal thing, i wasnt sure. i just know this thing shut off after about 5 minutes or whatever. it was a rental truck i have my normal truck back, my company didnt turn on the idle the rental company did. my boss wouldnt do that he's not a prick, he wont even buy new trucks because the emission nonsense on them. right now i have an 07 it definitely doesnt have any clean idle thing. i think turning a truck off and starting it 18+ times a day would be horrific on the engine.
