At Schneider (and this may be a rule industry-wide), since we're on e-logs, we must always keep a paper log book in the unit in case the MCP goes down for any length of time.

In 10 months, that has happened to me one time. Kansas, about 4AM, it started acting like it got ahold of some bad booze or something. On my graph, instead of the blue lines, the failed area came up red. Accompanying that was a notice telling me I was required to keep a paper log for the affected period.

So you just have to track on paper from the time it fails until the time it's restored?

Yeah, got that. They don't exactly make clear what you are supposed to do in case of failure. Much like the brake adjustment section. Tells you what to adjust the brakes to, doesn't say how.

It's not secluded to Schneider. If your e-log fails and you have no reserve log book; you cannot legally drive a CMV.

Mine failed yesterday. Enroute from Indy to Youngstown, OH. The problem was a sensor failure. It still graphed correctly and duty status was good. Only problem was it wasn't tracking the location, all info had me in Indy the whole time. On the graph, the time it wasn't working was in red. I went under bunk and wiggled connections. Problem solved.

I don't think it's really too much of a hastle if the e-log fails. drivers have been using paper logs for years before the new technology. It's still pretty easy.

    Could be a real problem.

What if it fails totally and you cannot provide the previous 7 days logs as well.

Better be able to reconstruct them.
