My cousin wants to get his CDL. Problem is he doesn't even have a regular license now. His license was suspended in '09 for reckless drinking. Now he has to have sr22 insurance from Oregon in order to get his licence even though he has lived in Texas over a year.
On top of that he has a class A (I think) felony, but he was like 12 when convicted.
Also, his driving record before the last one was not real good either.
Any advice?

Tell him that he could either spend several thousand dollars for the training to get his CDL, then many hours (days, weeks, months...) trying to find a company that will hire him with his less than stellar past...
Or to wake up and smell the roses, and find a different dream job. -
Yeah I kinda was leaning toward the latter, it's just he has asked like 42 times about whether or not I figured he could get his CDL.

It's easy to get a CDL.
But with his background it will be just about impossible to find a job in the field. -
Unless he was prosecuted as an adult, his juvenile record should be sealed where employers can't see it. What hurts him is the reckless driving. It's almost as bad as a DUI/DWI. It take 3 years or more before a trucking company will even consider him.
It's good he's looking in the right direction. But trucking has no room for craziness or immaturity. Sounds like he has some growing up to do yet. Go get the regular license first and maybe next year he can give it a try. It won't be an easy road, but it's possible. -
Having a sr22?, dout it, but even if he could get his CDL, have him take to the DMV, might find it very hard to get hired, most sr22 are 3years in length, how much longer doe he have on his sr22, better to wait until its over

It doesn't sound real promising. He needs to start by getting his regular license back. I don't know if they will look at the date he got it back or the date he was elgible to get it back.
I would say no way as long as there is an SR-22 filing but I don't know that I would be correct.
You said "reckless drinking" in your post. Was it driving or drinking. Not sure it matters much as both are bad news for a professional driving career. -
The Marines need a few good drivers. (don't say ANYTHING about a Juvenile record, it'll blow the whole deal).
In a few months your family will be minus one kid, plus one Red White and Blue HERO.
Eight years later, any company will hire him.lammchop558 Thanks this. -
I believe your cousin is going about this the wrong way. First, he needs to check out companies and find out if he is infact employable as a driver BEFORE he puts his money down for a school.
.
Note: if less than 21 years of age, he can only drive intrastate [within one state and not crossing any other state line]. If less than 23 years of age it will be challenging to find employment even with a pristine driving and background check in this economy. Obviously, the more promising applicants with clean driving and background checks have a clear advantage over him.
.
To keep it real, it does not look at all promising. Maybe a smaller trash hauling company would be interested. I doubt even the biggest trash haulers like Waste Management or BFI would touch him. Sorry if I am raining on his parade.
