so ive kinda done something that might've been kinda illegal or maybe just enough to get me fired and i wanted to ask what other people think i should do or maybe if theres someone else at Schneider that could ask.

about three years ago i thought i was maybe having trouble sleeping and my job had health insurance for a while. so i ended up seeing a sleep doctor and he said that i had moderate sleep apnea. not real heavy problems but he had me get a cpap machine and ive been using it the past few years.

a while ago i lost that job and decided that i'd try to get my cdl. i finished with that and decided to get on with Schneider. when the recruiter called me for the phone interview she asked me a bunch of medical questions, stuff like do you have asthma or do you have high blood pressure, all that stuff that can keep you from getting a job. but then she asked me if i have sleep apnea. i kinda panicked because i needed the job and i wanted to work at schneider and i figured that if i said yes that i do have sleep apnea that they wouldnt hire me. so i just said no like i did to everything else.

then they had me go take the dot physical, and i was afraid that if i said yes to sleep apnea on the physical but no to schneider that theyd figure out that i lied to them. and then schneider had me take ANOTHER test thing where they asked a bunch of questions about how well i sleep and things, and so i lied about it again.

so i went through the training and just didnt use my cpap during that time and i did okay for a while, but now im going solo and ive got a battery pack for it so i can use it on the truck. it sounds like they wouldnt actually fire me for having sleep apnea as long as im on a cpap machine and im not too tired during the day, but now im afraid that theyll find out that i lied to them and fire me for lying. or worse they find out that i lied on the DOT physical and then the DOT gets on my case. id kinda like to just tell schneider the truth so that they dont find out by accident and kick me out for it but im just as worried now that theyll fire me anyway if i tell them.

does anyone know how schnieder will react if i tell them? is there maybe somebody i should email like a recruiter or someone who would let me change things? is anything going to happen if they find out i lied about my physical? id kinda like to get this done right so that i dont end up losing my job now that ive got it started.

Wow, never ever lie to a trucking company, I guess you've figured that out. How close are you with your DBL? Do you have a good record with SNI? Coming clean would still be better than SNI finding out on their own, but really, that's the only things I can think of.
Wait a minute, try calling the EAP, things there are kept in confidence as far as I know, but I can't guarantee what the outcome may be.
One thing I've learned about trucking companies, they believe in double standards, it's fine for them to lie, but not you. That said, SNI is the only big company I was with that I never felt lied too.
    Good luck there driver.:biggrin_25525:

I agree. Wait until you have the insurance set up through Schneider. Then seek a referral to a sleep doctor and go through the testing again. If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea again then you will get another cpap machine (probably newer and better). This will give you 1 for the truck and 1 for home or at least a spare as a back up.

And SNI will pay for the machine as well as put an inverter in your truck.

Schneider can not and will not fire you for a NEW diagnosis, in fact, they will assist you in managing your disorder and ensure that you are compliant with your CPAP usage. They have entrusted you with a very expensive truck and trailer and the freight you haul, they want you to be safe and well rested on the road. Of all the companies I know, Schneider seems to genuinely care about safety more than most carriers!!!

"SOMEONE" I know VERY well (if you catch my meaning) did EXACTLY the same thing you describe. "HE" was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 1998 and "HE" has had a CPAP machine ever since.

"HE" did not tell Schneider about it. But found out that Schneider has the ABSOLUTE BEST SLEEP APNEA SCREENING AND TREATMENT REFERRAL PROGRAM of any company I, oops, "HE" has ever worked for!!!

Schneider sent this driver to a sleep center, they are connected to several all over the country, and went thru a sleep study again. Knowing full well what the results would be. Of course it was determined that the driver had SEVERE sleep apnea (stopped breathing 60-70 times an hour!). He was given a brand new CPAP machine WITH $0 OUT OF HIS POCKET! The only condition was that every 3 months he had to "download" data off his machine onto a small microchip and turn it in to Schneider to prove that he was actually using the machine for no less than 5 hours a day and it was effective in reducing the sleep apnea episodes.

Additionally, Schneider relaxed his maximum idle time restrictions to 40% so that the driver would be able to idle the truck to power his CPAP.

"My friend" went thru the same mental anguish you seem to be dealing with. Just pretend ignorance and get in touch with the folks in Green Bay that manage Schneider's sleep apnea program. I don't remember the girl's name, but she is a Registered Nurse and is extremly helpful.
