I don't think anybody in their right mind would weld a wheel... esp a steer, way too much liability if something goes bad later.

...not to mention very stupid thing to do. Illegal part is bad too, first inspection and you're parked.

Folks, I'm just curious- I make it a point to keep up with the regs. I agree that a cracked wheel is a violation, but can anyone find the FMVSR that prohibits using a wheel that has been welded or repaired?

Appreciate it, please send the code numbers, I'll mark it- Thanks!

If you call a truck dealership's body shop they can give you the name of an outfit that repairs aluminum rims and whether they can be welded. Every steel wheel is welded, it is amazing what a quality outfit can do or if they can not repair yours they will be a good source of a replacement.
    Just a thought!

Whatever you do, don't do it with the tire inflated. This applies to just plain old heating the rims to get something unstuck, etc., as well. :biggrin_25524:

Used rims can almost always be found on Ebay. Just watch the shipping prices.

Good one, THANKS! I grew up around diesel shops- I've seen rims welded with the tire mounted. Had no idea that could happen.
