What exactly does this mean???? If you have a 40k rear, is it upgradable to a 46k rear or does it entail a whole lot of other things?? Cannot find any information on the topic and am new to this. Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm guessing it refers to the weight rating of the axles.
    I don't know off-hand if it's possible to increase w/o replacement.
Only the maker will know for sure.
In most cases, you'll legally max at 34k on the drives.
This depends on what you're hauling & permitted for.

    Hope this helped.

It means that the rear suspension (on the tractor or trailer) is designed to carry 46k of load. Now remember, just because you have 46 rears, doesn't mean that you can legally run that much, unless you have overweight permits. Upgrading to 46 rears can be costly, better to buy a truck specced that way, esp since you're looking to haul trash and mentioned that you would be getting the NY overweight permit anyway.

BTW, you may even be ably to find a tractor with 52k rears, but odd are that'll be setup for REALLY heavy hauling, and may be a tridem with two speed rears, that you may or may not need.

AFAIK, 46k rears have bigger bearings and larger diameter axle shafts and wheel ends. I think the housing is the same. Suspension is heavier too.

    Costs $ to upgrade.

Thanks for the replies. Seems like there is much more available with the 40k rears, but that won't fulfill the requirements. I will continue my search for one specced that way.

If you haven't got in touch with Burky yet, go ahead: A michigan special will fit what you want to do nicely- trust me, I see em pulling some SERIOUSLY overweight loads around here.
