    Hello

I'm thinking about going to school with my wife to be OTR truckers together. Has anyone had any luck negotiating the schools down on their price. If so, whats the lowest price you've seen for paying cash outright.

Also, from my research I see the community college route is much cheaper (2.5k compared to 5k), but takes 8-10 weeks as opposed to 3-4 weeks. The private cdl mills don't seem to try to compete with these prices, does anyone know why?

EDIT: We're on the west coast of Florida.

well good luck on that . i would try roadmaster if you are gonna be paying in cash. u might get a deal from them. Being florida you are in the worst freight corridor their is moving would be a good idea if this what your are going to be doing for many years. Can make it very difficult to find a job living where your at.

Community colleges charge their price as it relates to credit-hours for ANY course the college offers (covers instructor salaries + classroom) plus the specific course fees to cover the trucks and operating expenses (insurance, fuel, etc.). You are in class for the duration of the semester, though...so there is a significant time investment to consider in addition to the money.

With the CDL mill, they charge more because your time is a valuable commodity to you and you are willing to pay a little more up front in order to get it out of the way and get to work sooner.

Now as far as negotiating the tuition cost down further, the school will likely tell you "this is our price...either pay it or don't attend" because they can. If you claim you can attend another CDL mill for less, they will likely tell you how much better THEIR program is and that quality (gag) costs money....but if you're OK with receiving crappy instruction at that cheaper place, go right on ahead and throw your money away. They really don't care if you attend their school or not because if you don't, there's 100 others ready & willing to take your place....so there's really no incentive for them to negotiate a lower tuition rate with you or anyone else.

The private driving school in this part of nowhere offers group pricing. One person is $4200.

i know my school has two different courses they have one is a shorter pay course that's $4500.00 and the other is a 22 week course that's $9450.00 you will not talk them down on price because they are the best and will teach you what you need to know. I am doing the 22 week course because it teaches you everything from doubles/triples ,tankers, hazmat to map reading and log books and trip planning.
