I see their trucks all over Washington and Oregon. I'll be looking at companies in this area come early next year. Anyone know anything about driving for them?
Thanks in advance.

They are your typical (almost) Ltl company. They are union but broke out of the Master Freight agreement sometime ago, not sure exactly when though. Right now they are working without a contract since Oct 31st, apparently the owners want the drivers to make some pretty big concessions. I believe they drive mostly auto's up here. Not sure if they would hire someone right out of school, I'm pretty sure they wouldnt but it would not hurt to ask. If you are young and dont mind paying your dues there is also Yellow/Roadway, Reddaway. ABF might take students and there is some smaller Ltl's up here also

There wasn't a thread on them here, and when I googled them there wasn't much info out there. Thanks for the other leads. I'll do some homework on them. I'm in the Portland/Vancouver area, and will finish cdl school by the end of the year. I keep hearing good things about Gordon, and they do hire new drivers right out of school, but I want to make sure I've researched as many companies as possible.

I applied with this company a couple years back and they wanted to use me as a filler but I was looking for Full time work.
I worked on the casual board at both Viking and RPS but could never get enough hours and they want you to be available to work 24/7.
I don't think they will take someone strait out of school. All the LTL's up here in the NW get tons of apps from OTR drivers with years of experience and the hiring is pretty competitive.
I put in a application at a smaller LTL outfit in Kent Wa last week and they had 11 applicants the first day without any advertising. -
Yea there is alot of drivers looking for LTL jobs up here. OHFL does not have a casual board, at least in Portland, (that was my understanding) thats one of the reasons I applied to them, lol long story short they would not hire me and would not tell me why. Houna I see you are looking at IITR, I went there back in 89. I am also in the Ptld/Vanc area so if you need any help just say so. I have talked and worked with some Gorden drivers over the years and have not heard any big complaints, might be kinda tough doing something local for them though....I see you are no spring chicken but ABF still might be an option coming right out of school, you would probably have to be a casual and work the docks also but they are a good employer, pay is Master Freight with all the benefits. The downside for me, which is why I did not apply there, was the dock work and the possibility of layoffs. Good luck whatever you end up with.

Nope, no chickens here... just one wiley old fox.

I actually like the idea of OTR. I've done a lot of long distance driving through all but 9 states here, from the north tip to the south tip of Japan a couple of dozen times (was in a seven hour traffic jam in Tokyo and a thirteen hour blizzard-induced jam near Nagano, where the winter Olympics were held a few years back. I now truly understand why the Japanese practice Zen) and across eastern Australia and Ireland. In the last three countries, the vehicle is on the left side of the road and the steering wheel is on the right. Figuring out how to shift there wasn't so bad cuz the pedals are in the same order as here, but everytime you want to turn, the wipers go on instead.
I can see from what I read here that local or regional is hard to get, but that's OK. Folks raising families ought to get them. I'm not, and my folks are gone now too, so I don't really have obligations that keep me here. Anyway... I've been following the Interstate threads, and that is another company that seems like a good possibiity.
Thanks again, rockee. When I get into IITR school, I may take you up on your offer to help. Be happy to buy you a cuppa coffee to pick your brain.
