Well the Stakes just went UP 10 fold!!!
If you have seen my other threads you will know I am in desperate need of some really good advice for the 2 companies I have to choose from...
I have a new born on the way and am unemployed and am going back over the road as the economy sucks and jobs are scarce.
Need to get in, make some money, get some "RECENT OTR" experience, guess you forget how being away from home feels or driving down long straight roads is easier then those in the NE or something...Don't understand that but it's just another part of trucking, then move on to better things.
I have been asking bout Western Express and Covenant. Spoke to Western Express today and recruiter told me same thing word for word that other drivers here have told me they would say......My issue now is that Covenant has sent me a letter of intent to hire....
I have some issues and knowing the industry and making a career, at least in the early days, of being an "Orientation Specialist" lol, had instructed them that I needed to be assured that not only was I cleared by safety but that they were willing to hire me upon completion of a drug screen, physical, and road test. They have complied with my concerns and sent me a letter of intent to hire... It is signed by their VP of safety and states clearly the intent.
I am supposed to call Western on Monday as they too were eager to hire but stated "Everything looks good, don't see there being a problem" but as I stated, I've heard that many, many times in the past and I would attend 2 or 3 day orientations then be sent home the last day for something.....
Looking for some STRONG advice on Western Express or Covenant......do I try to get W.E. to commit in writing and go with them or do I just go with the one who already has committed to giving me work???
Please, if you could send me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it...................

i worked for w.e. several years ago out of the fontana ca yard which is where my dispatcher was also, running western 11. supposedly guaranteed 2 days home-time every two weeks, But if you end up in Texas, which is often. walmart Palestine TX is a regular. the Nashville dispatcher will take over and keep you in the mid west or run you eastern, then have to fight for home-time. I live in Southern Cal, my brother had cancer, lived nearby me, one day i was in Dallas waiting on a load, got word he was in a hospice with just a few days to live, told my dispatcher "get me home asap" gets me a pickup in Dallas delivers to lowes dc in Cheyenne, then a pickup 2 days later in northeast Colorado going to Phoenix, by the time i got a load out of Phoenix to home, i had missed the funeral. i came very close to abandoning the truck. needless to say i left them, also was called a baby a few times for refusing to run illegal. went to work for Schneider western regional, was when my father who lived in Tucson was in a hospice due to congestive heart failure. i was in Seattle with an mt waiting for a load. Schneider had me drop the mt at a drop yard nearby and go to the nearest truckstop put the key on the dipstick they had a shuttle come from the airport and flew me to Tucson, when i got back to Fontana, there was my truck nothing missing. i take my hat off to Schneider. only reason im no longer with them is i got on the kohls dedicated and we lost that acct. only openings at the time was the 48 state and found a local job with great pay

While I can't speak to W.E., or Covenant. Why limit yourself to these two companies?
There are thousands of smaller companies that might be able to hire you, and may well be closer to home even.
Here are two sites that I have found to be helpful. CLick the link, and then click on your state. It will list MANY of the companies found there. The second link lists them by State then City.

Your gonna deal with the same crap from both so flip a coin, why did you have to make a new thread just to tell us one offered you a job.
-
Or maybe you were just curious about what the stakes were but didn't care really care to help me choose..
I was offered a job by BOTH of them already! It is just that now one has guaranteed it in writing and the other hasn't.
I'm just trying to make the best decision I can before I have to leave next week to go to one of them....
I know flipping a coin is probably my best bet, but always trying to get the best I can possibly get right now...even if it's the difference between the time it takes to answer the phone or to receive you qual-comm message....Every little bit helps when your options have been taken away and your left grasping for something..... -
Have you looked at the threads for each company, and I did reply to the other one I got nuttin better to do while I drive down the road

Have you considered posting an ad for employment out there on both truck paper and here??

If I were you, I'd skip the road and stay at home if you can maintain on an hourly job, even if it is Lowes, Home Depot, McDonalds, etc. The money isn't guranteed out on the road. You have a newborn, trucking won't make it any easier. Actually, why would you leave your sig. other with a new child......kinda of a jerk move. I just recently had 2 weeks of Mcdonalds type paychecks, and I was away for a month. It wasn't worth it. IMHO you are just asking for more heartache and troubles. I don't know all aspects of your current situation, I just hate to see you try to help ur problems away from home. Suck it up, go flip burgers. Get two 8Hr/day burger jobs. Its the same time you would have put into a day of trucking anyway, and you will not be disappointed far away from home.
The cards are stacked against you since you have no recent experience. Covenant is crap, has been for awhile(yes, I worked there) WE isn't much better from what I have heard or read on these forums. Your 12 years dosen't mean squat to these big outfits. I ran to the road many times, with almost nothing to lose, and still lost. Best of luck to you. -

With the way the industry is hiring I would talk to other companies before making a finaal decision. Covenant is primarily team driving so if you want solo get it in writing. I'd burn the phone up with as many companies as possible before deciding. Just my thoughts. I do wish you the best, my thoughts and prayers for you and your family.
