Howdy there, my handle is Miss Muffy. I drove OTR for 6 months, team driving with my ex, just quit last November when we broke up. I once drove the entire span of I-85 without stopping at all, took me my whole eleven hours. My mother told me I was conceived in a big rig, she hid the pregnancy to stay on the road and thats where I was born. They drove me home from the hospital in a Peterbuilt. When I got older I pursued other professions...fast food, retail, being a carnie, the spa industy, stripping, even panhandling...but instead of going out to see the country waving my thumb with a tin-can like most squatter-like hippie kids my age, I thought 'Screw it, why not follow in my parents footsteps and just do it way better?' So, I did and I had an awesome time. I did stuff like stay in that truck stop near the Vegas strip (the one that brings you out right beside the Camelot if you walk over the interstate bridge) and run amok on the city for a day before the delivery time. I drove to the center of Roswell, NM and parked on the street a block over from the UFO museum to go inside. I took my 20 lb. deaf, white cat to see the whole country and visit many hotels. I spent alot of time in Chicago and a bunch of other stuff. I got a little burnt out towards the end (they can run a team like dogs!) but was sad it didn't work out.
After I quit I was pretty depressed I guess and it took awhile to get stuff straight. I moved back in with my mom and delivered pizza for Domino's (they loved it when I applied with a CDL, lol). I hated it though. I have social anxiety that gets me down in the workplace and I started having panic attacks and just freaking out so I quit. I've been unemployed for almost six months now, just afraid to get myself in the same anxious situation if i do get another job. I haven't figured out any work to do where I'd have the freedom and aloneness I need so I figured I might as well hit the road again. I better do it before the experience I had runs over a year's time too. Apparently experience is worthless if its not current with most companies, whats up with that?
I'm looking forward to getting another job and am in the process of looking. The money doesn't really matter but I need to have a little income. The thing that matters the most is home time. It has to work out to where I'm home half of the time, whether I'm out for 2 weeks and home for 2 weeks or out for 4 days and home for 3, to keep my head straight I just have to get home. Any good company recommendations would be mucho appreciated. :biggrin_25525: I'd also be concerned about the truck I drive. I dealt with too much down time from blow-outs because the last company didn't want to pay to take good care of the truck. The drive shaft falling out was a little scary too.
I have missed the road though. All of those quaint little truck stop diners, slippin' into a bar for a beer with the other truckers before hittin' the sleeper, even washing up in a bathroom sink and the sunsets. Flying solo will be cool since I'll have to stop somewhere every eleven hours for eight or ten or whatnot and I'd gotten used to the truck moving 24-7 before. I think I can plan all my shifts for a nice meal and hot shower at the end too. I'm just hoping my new truck will have a working CB so I can keep myself company talking to Rubber Ducky or whoever while I cruise along. I really hope I find a good company to work for and soon....I hear the road callin'.

Hi, miss_muffy. Welcome to TTR. Just one piece of advice for you. Don't ever tell any prospective employer what you stated here about the money:

    "The money doesn't really matter..."

Because you'll sure find somebody to take advantage of you. I've hired a few drivers over the years and I never hired one because he told me how cheap he'd work. In fact, just the opposite - I never could afford a cheap truck driver!

    Good luck.
